The Christophers are a Christian inspirational movement founded in 1945 by Father James Keller to promote positive societal action and Christian values. The production was in part an outgrowth of the Cold War, as it definitely has an anti-Communist, pro-faith, patriotic message. It features comedian Jack Benny and some of his celebrity friends, who listen to Father Keller discuss the organization and its focus on persuading young people to pursue public service careers. According to press about the film, it was made after Keller asked his friend, director Leo McCarey to help produce it. Stars quickly volunteered their services -- Bing Crosby sang a song, Bob Hope did a telephone sequence, and the stars, director, cameramen, producers and others contributed at least half a million dollars' worth of free time. Credits: Starring Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, Jack Benny, Ann Blyth, Bing Crosby, Paul Douglas, Irene Dunne, William Holden, Bob Hope, Loretta Young. Produced by William Perlberg. The film begins with Rochester (Eddie Anderson), calling guests Loretta Young and Irene Dunne on a rotary phone to invite them to a house party at Jack Benny’s house (0:49). At the party (1:37), Paul Douglas offers Bill a cigarette. Jack tells guests Father James Keller, founder of the Christophers movement, is coming to discuss making a movie (2:06). Father Keller discusses the purpose of the Christophers— to get more people into teaching, government, writing, labor, social service, and library work— and his desire to make movies (3:39). The guests discuss the movement’s purpose and Father Keller answers their questions (4:00). He references the Declaration of Independence (6:22); Paul quotes the “when in the course of human events” part of the Declaration (6:55). Father Keller picks up a copy of the Declaration, pointing out its references to God, and Paul continues reciting the Declaration preamble (7:45). Father Keller shows the differences in the first vs. current drafts of the Declaration (8:22); Paul recites the Declaration’s last paragraph. Father Keller quotes Adolf Hitler’s (10:10) and Karl Marx’s (10:35) resistance to the Christian doctrine idea of each human being having unalienable rights from God. Father Keller says the Christophers are not an anti-communist movement (11:20), but rather focus on promoting positive values. He discusses lack of teachers (12:20), librarians, and government workers, and says what is happening in America is the same as what occurred in Nazi Germany (13:02). Irene Dunne references William Penn’s quote about “being ruled by tyrants” (13:20). Father Keller talks about people he has converted to the Christopher movement: a Baptist schoolteacher in Texas (14:38) and a woman who worked to keep a Black gas station attendant employed (15:57). Irene references a Reader’s Digest article on imprisoned Russian schoolteacher, Madame Kassenkada (17:23); Father Keller says he met a Connecticut woman who got her brother, a lawyer, to get a subpoena to the Russian Consul General (18:17). The guests agree to join the Christopher movement (21:46). Rochester tells Father Keller songwriters Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Houston are there and have written a song he could use (22:35). The two songwriters enter, with Bing Crosby following them (23:02). Crosby sings the new song, “Early American” (23:37), written in 1964. Keller receives a telegram from Bob Hope (25:59) from Houston, Texas. Jack puts Bob on the phone with Keller (27:29). The film cuts to Hope in Texas, in a cowboy hat, with cows behind him (28:01); he endorses Keller’s ideas about the Declaration. Keller shows Jack a copy of Abraham Lincoln’s 1858 speech referencing the Declaration of Independence (29:56). The film ends, listing other planned Christopher films. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
