It was one of a series of short or interstitial shows that aired in the late 1950s in place of TV commercials. It featured various events in history, condensed to about three minutes. The series producer was Richard B. Morros. Albert Einstein lived a life marked by profound contributions to the betterment of society and science while waging peaceful efforts amid a tumultuous globe. As the nuclear age approached he remained against atomic and nuclear warfare stating “The war is one, but peace is not.” He also stated “the unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking…” During his lifetime, he fundamentally transformed human interpretation of the universe from the microorganism of the atom to the vast spread of interplanetary voids. The film also stresses in spite of his fame and massive contributions, the character of the man remained shy and humble. It explores, briefly, his theories of relativity, the photoelectric effect, his time spent at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, his advocacy work for peace and support for Zionism. The newsreel traces his life as he relocated from Germany in the 1930’s, his success as a Nobel Peace Prize winner and his death in 1955. 00:00 Series header (:09) and episode title screen noting Albert’s birthday was March 14th, 1879 (:16). Opening footage from 1935 captures Einstein and his wife, Mileva Maric (:42) as they arrive from a trek aboard the Hapbag ship “Oakland” (:44) to the US. Narration discusses his impact on the 20th century including his prolific theory of relativity. Einstein and his wife were fleeing Nazi persecution. Cheerleaders wag pom poms for the traveling genius (:50). Wife and Scientist stayed at the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena. Close shots watch his face (1:04) as narration stresses Albert’s shyness and dodgy behavior towards the press. He toured Mount Wilson Observatory in January of 1931. Astronomers stand within the mammoth telescope (1:12). He appears bashful under press lights on his doorstep in Princeton, New Jersey (1:33). A few years forward, in 1953, and Albert is looking over a scale model of a new medical college to be erected in the Bronx, New York (1:49); the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Due to Nazi persecution, he became an Americanized citizen in 1940. Photographs snap and the US flag dangles behind (2:00). The world entered the atomic age. Einstein and Jawaharlal Nehru (2:06) pressed for social justice and for benevolent use of atomic over militant. Einstein and first Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion met in 1952 (2:22). In retirement (2:38) as a Nobel laureate, he received much acclaim from diplomats and other worldly figures. Words by President Eisenhower (3:00) are heard following the scientist’s death in 1955. The film was produced by Richard B. Morros Inc. in association with Hearst Metrotone News Inc. (3:24) and distributed by Official Films. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
