<description>This untitled home 16mm home movie film from 1947 chronicles the famed Rex Parade of New Orleans, Louisiana’s Mardi Gras celebrations as well as highlights some historical and touristic sites in the city. It is unclear who made this film however the creator is likely connected to the family featured in the opening scenes of the film. Mardi Gras is a holiday that is not limited to New Orleans but rather is celebrated across all of Louisiana. The Celebrations are concentrated for a two-week period before and through Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday which is the start of Lent in Western Christian tradition). The parades in New Orleans are organized by various social clubs referred to as krewes. The parade featured in this film is from one of the earliest-established krewes known as the Rex Krewe which is known from the signature float of a king character with his royal court. Opening shot of two women in matching jester costumes then rest of family and home staff join for portrait (0:09). Montage of clips of people gathered on sidewalks for Mardi Gras Parade in various costumes (0:23). Procession of floats, performers, and special guests through the French Quarter of New Orleans as part of the Rex Parade (3:00). Float of Rex, King of Carnival (3:17). Clips of other floats from the Rex Parade with some featuring cultural and historical sites and costumes such as the Taj Mahal, dirndls, and Roman-style armor (3:26-8:55). Young child walks on a sandy shore (8:57). Shot of Lake Pontchartrain (9:16). Three women pose for a photo in front of what may be Longue Vue House &amp; Gardens (9:33). Camera pans an ivy-colored building that seems to be a country club on the lake-front (10:27). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
