<description>Dating to the 1950s, Pan American World Airways’ travel film Wings To Germany highlights the urban and rural attractions of the country. The film begins with Pan Am’s Clipper flight 100 on route to Frankfurt, Germany. Frankfurt is a bustling city, featuring Eschenheimer Turm (01:49) and other old buildings with busy streets and cafés. West Berlin (02:33) is similarly a bustling urban center with a number of sidewalk cafés. The Airlift Memorial in the city’s center is a popular landmark. From here, the film takes viewers to “old” Germany, starting with the Bavarian village of Rothenburg (03:04). Rothenburg is home to medieval buildings, and ox-drawn carts are still a part of life here. Life here follows old customs: a local chimney sweep (03:40) is off to work. Tourists can marvel at statue of St. George in the town square (04:24). The next stop is Freiburg, with an aerial shot (04:32) of the “capital of the Black Forest.” It is a lively market town, where people buy produce and kids can buy handcrafted toys. Other crafts are abundant, including clocks. Many people still wear traditional clothing (05:45). A trip along the Autobahn (06:23) takes viewers to Bayreuth (06:32), the city of Richard Wagner. A festival here is dedicated to the famous composer, who built his own opera house in the city. Traveling down the River Rhine (07:10) gives visitors a chance to see incredible countryside dotted with castles and churches. Barges take care when passing Lorelei Point (07:40). Vineyards (08:52) also call the banks of the Rhine home, where people can take chairlifts (09:18) over the vineyards for a better view. Wine connoisseurs in the region taste the vintages, and the Wine Festival (10:00) signals an end to months of work in the vineyard. Festivities include a marching band and traditional dancing (10:32). The film cuts back to the Pan-Am flight, which is nearing Germany, before returning to “tour” the country. The next stop is Heidelberg (11:05), featuring Heidelberg Castle and a great wine cask. The town of Oberammergau (12:19) is known for the Passion play the townspeople put on every ten years. Frescoes of biblical scenes adorn the exteriors of buildings here, and master woodcarvers (13:00) create religious statues. Up in the Bavarian Alps is Garmisch-Partenkirchen (14:02), the ideal place for trout fishing and sailing in the summer and skiing and skating during the winter. Visitors enjoy the lake (14:58) and the many activities in the area. Snow on the summit of Zugspitze Mountain (16:19) indicates winter is coming. People walk about or skate, all against a beautiful natural backdrop. People ride chair lifts and gondolas (16:55) up the mountain to ski and take in the spectacular views from the summit of Zugspitze. Ski jumping (18:48), bobsledding (19:36), slalom skiing (20:14), and downhill racing (21:02) are popular sports to compete in or just watch. The next stop is the gardens of Bavaria’s Castle Linderhof (22:42). The final stop is Munich for Oktoberfest. The famous traditional dance Schuhplattler (23:00) and live music dominate Munich’s opera house. People celebrate the festival with music, dancing, and drinking. A parade (23:57) of citizens, marching bands, and brewers makes its way to the fairgrounds (24:56). Here, a carnival (25:50) is in full swing outside of the tents that house thousands of people who eat and drink the best of what Germany has to offer.
