Mathes, Inc. and the Capehart-Farnsworth Service Department, this is a rare 1950s-era black-and-white TV repairman training film. Here, good customer service is referred to as the “sale after the sale” where the salesman delivers a sale and the serviceman creates a happy and loyal customer. This film follows service technician Joe as he installs a 1950 Capehart Virginian TV set in a suburban family home. In the first half of the film, Joe exemplifies what NOT to do on the job while in the second half he exemplifies a job well done. The Capehart-Farnsworth brand was created by inventor Philo T. Farnsworth, the famous founder of Philco. After Farnsworth was forced out of Philco, he bought the struggling Capehart radio and phonograph company (originally created by Homer E. Capehart) and renamed it the Farnsworth Television & Radio Corp. It sold TVs throughout the 1950s and ceased production in 1965. Note: this film was rescued by Johnathan Brouwer, who provided it to Periscope Film for scanning and preservation. Opening credits, main title missing (0:05). Joe looks at reflection in living room mirror, appearance changes from unshaven and scraggly to fresh-faced, slicked back hair, and uniform with bow-tie (9:49).
