The most satisfactory methods of getting rid of flies are shown, with emphasis being laid on the fact that community effort is much more effective than isolated individual attempts to get rid of flies. 0:26-0:47: The common house fly, though uninvited, is a frequent guest at our dining tables and kitchens. Its filthy habits endanger our health and lives, making it one of the most deadly spreaders of disease. 0:50-1:04: To control or destroy this pest, we must understand its life and habits. The house fly lays its eggs in animal refuse, where the heat from decay helps incubate them. 1:08-1:26: The mother fly lays eggs using a long tube, with clusters of eggs visible under magnification. Each mother fly can lay up to five batches of about 100 eggs each. 1:30-2:00: Under favorable conditions, eggs hatch into maggots within 24 hours. These wriggling creatures feed and grow in filth, and are often eaten by barnyard chickens. 2:04-2:38: Maggots avoid sunlight and dig deeper into hiding places. After about a week, they form a protective pupa, which lasts about five days unless it is late fall, when it may last through winter. 2:41-3:06: A fly emerges from the pupal case using an expander on its head. The expander swells and breaks open the case, allowing the fly to push its way out. 3:09-4:08: Newly emerged flies crawl toward the surface. If body juices flow into the wings before reaching the surface, the fly may die underground. Otherwise, the fly reaches the surface and its wings unfold. 4:11-6:02: The fly's keen sense of smell guides it to food, often in kitchens or garbage cans. The house fly has four life stages: egg, maggot, pupa, and adult. Its head is covered by compound eyes, and it dissolves solid food with liquid from its stomach. 6:05-7:16: Flies carry disease germs on their bodies and in their stomachs. When they feed, they leave fly spots that may contain millions of germs, spreading diseases like typhoid and summer diarrhea. 7:19-8:22: A single mother fly can produce millions of offspring by autumn. Early spring flies should be destroyed to control the population. Flies can be controlled with fly paper, swatters, and screens. 8:25-9:57: The best way to control flies is to eliminate breeding places. Manure heaps should be removed regularly, and garbage should be kept in covered cans and collected in a sanitary way. Burning garbage in incinerators is an effective method. Community cooperation is essential to control the house fly menace. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
