The situation by this point was increasingly a stalemate. After the October 1950 invasion by Chinese forces across the Yalu, there was a reversal for UN forces which continued until mid-1951. Seoul changed hands four times, and the last two years of conflict became a war of attrition, with the front line close to the 38th parallel. The war in the air, however, was never a stalemate. North Korea was subject to a massive bombing campaign. Jet aircraft were used in air-to-air combat for the first time in history, and Soviet pilots covertly flew in defense of their Communist allies. The fighting finally ended on 27 July 1953, when the armistice was signed. The agreement created the Korean Demilitarized Zone to separate North and South Korea, and allowed the return of prisoners. Clashes have continued to the present. This film shows battles continuing around Inje, F-51 aircraft making strikes against Chinese foces, fighting around the 38th Parallel near Kumhwa, Hwachon Reservoir, and Yonchon. After a break on other topics (described below) coverage of Korea resumes at the 16 minute mark with a further discussion of the fighting along the 38th Parallel. The film also contains at 7:45, a segment about the U.S. Navy's submarine school in New London, Connecticut. Training is shown as well as overhaul of submarines in dry dock. At the 11 minute mark Dwight D. Eisenhower is shown inspecting an honor guard of a Danish and Norweigian combat group, part of the newly-formed NATO force.
