The Century 21 Exposition (also known as the Seattle World's Fair) was held April 21, 1962, to October 21, 1962, in Seattle, Washington. Nearly 10 million people attended the fair during its six-month run. As planned, the exposition left behind a fairground and numerous public buildings and public works; some credit it with revitalizing Seattle's economic and cultural life. The fair saw the construction of the Space Needle and Alweg monorail, as well as several sports venues (Washington State Coliseum, now Climate Pledge Arena) and performing arts buildings (the Playhouse, now the Cornish Playhouse), most of which have since been replaced or heavily remodeled. Unlike some other world's fairs of its era, Century 21 made a profit. The site, slightly expanded since the fair, is now called the Seattle Center; the United States Science Pavilion is now the Pacific Science Center. 0:19 - 0:32: Introduction to the Fair with visitors arriving via an elevated monorail, setting the scene for a journey to the future. 0:32 - 0:55: The Exposition is described as America's first World's Fair in 22 years, themed "Century 21," showcasing the 21st century in Seattle, Washington. 1:02 - 1:25: The fair is set to host 10 million visitors on 72 acres with exhibits costing $80 million, showcasing American innovation in science, commerce, industry, and arts. 1:25 - 1:50: The fair's international aspect is highlighted, serving as a trade center for 50 nations, aiming to foster global cooperation in the quest for a better future. 1:50 - 2:19: Emphasis on both futuristic and contemporary attractions to engage visitors, blending education with entertainment. 2:19 - 2:40: Mention of the U.S. Post Office opening a special branch at the fairgrounds, issuing a commemorative stamp for the Space Needle, the symbol of the fair. 2:40 - 3:12: Description of the Space Needle, one of the main attractions, offering panoramic views from its height of 608 feet, making it the tallest structure west of the Mississippi at the time. 3:12 - 3:42: The view from the Space Needle includes the fairgrounds, Puget Sound, and Seattle. President Kennedy is referenced, linking the fair to themes of peace and future cooperation. 3:42 - 4:08: The International Fountain, designed by Japanese architects, is highlighted as a symbol of international collaboration. 4:08 - 4:33: The fair also includes traditional and new amusement rides in the "Gayway" area, offering fun for all ages alongside the serious exhibits. 4:33 - 4:59: The script concludes by summarizing the fair's purpose as a celebration of human achievement across time, focusing on past accomplishments and future aspirations in science and technology. 4:59 - 5:12: Final remarks on what visitors can expect at the fair, emphasizing the vision of life in the 21st century, set for the summer of 1962. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
