<description>Shot by an unknown American -- possibly a pilot who was assigned to the 15th Air Force -- this 8mm home movie shows views of life during WWII in Italy in 1944-45. This fascinating film begins with shots in what appears to be Pompeii outside of Naples; the film also shows travels as far north as Falconara, towards the end of WWII, and arrival in Naples to board the USS Randolph to return stateside. At 1:52, the amphitheater of Pompeii is visible. At 2:46, the U.S. Army Air Force base at Foggia is shown. At 3:05, an airplane tug on the base is seen, with C-47 cargo aircraft in the background. At 4:07, various ground crew and pilots are shown having fun for the camera. At 4:20 a sign says "No Smoking on Ramp". A wrecked B-25 Mitchell sits on the ground nearby (4:24) and a B-17 is also shown (4:28). At 4:47, a Douglas A-20 Havoc night fighter is shown followed at (5:05) by a Piper L-4 Grasshopper artillery spotting plane with no wings! At (5:42), a P-51 Mustang taxis past camera. At (5:51) more damaged aircraft are shown including a B-17 on the ground. At (6:00) a C-47 Skytrain tail #118444, the "Marie Celeste" is shown. At (6:25) a Beechcraft Model 18 is shown. At (6:31) a P-47 Thunderbolt sits on the runway. At (6:41) another L-4, this one with wing attached, is seen. At (7:12), pilots are shown drinking beer in front of the Weather'd Inn, the officer's club at the base. At (8:02) men gather outside the Squadron Headquarters. At (8:22), a sign for the C.O. &amp; Adjutant of the 522nd Air Service CP. is shown. This may be in Falconara, Italy or Foggia. (The 522nd served in Italy from 1943 to 1945.) At (8:45) rows of tents are shown. At (9:01) a group, possibly civilian assistants, including a couple of women pose for the camera. At (9:12) the women smile for the camera. At (9:18) a sign for Camp Marcianise, near Caserta, Italy. This was apparently an R&amp;R camp. At (10:13), a sign for 543rd Repl. Co. 1st Platoon is shown. A large winged statue stands at (10:30). At (11:42) views of a coastal town, possibly Naples or Foggia, are shown. At (12:02), airmen enjoy a beer in a park. At (12:44) a currency exchange office is shown with a mob of G.I.s outside. At (13:55), a silhouette of an aircraft carrier is shown. This is apparently USS Randolph, CV-15, which was in Europe to perform "Magic Carpet" service -- bringing back American soldiers to the USA. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us via the weblink below. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD.
