<description>Industry On Parade was a television series created by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) from 1950-1960. The series consisted of weekly episodes that highlighted American manufacturing and business. Hundreds of companies and products were documented during the program’s decade-long run. 1954’s episode (no. 197) begins with “Recipe For Reassurance!” At the DuPont Company’s Haskell Laboratory for Toxicology and Industrial Medicine (00:28) in Newark, DE, DuPont employees study health and safety issues surrounding their products. A man’s blood pressure and oxygen consumption are tested as he rides a stationary bicycle (00:55). A man stands on a platform that records his standing pressure. A woman pumps gas into a rat cage to expose the rat to the gas (01:44). A woman is the test subject for testing arctic clothing in various levels of humidity and cold temperatures (02:10). The next segment looks at the production of sprinklers at the Scovill Manufacturing Company’s Waterbury, CT plant. Metal rods are made in a 2,000-ton hydraulic press (03:40). The metal is taken up on reels and coiled while pliable. A man feeds the rods into a machine that cuts the metal and makes serrations on one end for water distribution (04:25). Women assemble gears in sprinkler heads (04:53). A woman and her two children test the same sprinkler head on a residential lawn (07:07). The next segment features the Aerocar, a flying car (07:33). An Aerocar pulls out of a residential driveway. The hybrid vehicles are produced at Aerocar International’s factory in Longview, WA. Moulton Taylor, founder of the company, converts an Aerocar from car to plane on a grassy airstrip (09:05). Taylor starts up the propeller and takes off in the Aerocar (10:01). In the final segment, viewers see music students enter the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA (11:12). Conservatory President Harrison Keller talks to students. Young children create their own instruments at home, including a triangle, drum, and tambourine. The children perform a song using their homemade instruments (12:50).
