The film begins with images of downtown Chicago, Illinois at night. The Central United Bank tower is seen as well as other landmarks. At the 1:20 mark, the National Air Races grandstands are shown, and at 1:50 a man -- possibly organizer Cliff Henderson, addresses the crowd. At 2:24, Army and Navy aircraft fly over the crowd. At 3:45, you will see biplanes flying in an "A.C." configuration, standing for "Air Corps" and the number "17" when the corps first saw combat. Sky writing is shown and various stunts. At 5:53, Captain Atcherley of England, Schneider Trophy pilot, is seen with his Curtiss Fledgling. At the 7:40 mark, wild stunts are seen with a Ford Trimotor airplane including spins, a loop, roll, and other maneuvers. The Sohio Trimotor comes in at 8:27 for a one-wheeled landing before getting airborne again. This aircraft was likely flown by Harold Johnson who was known for performing these kinds of stunts. At 8:55, an Autogyro is seen as well as an early model biplane. Astonishingly at the 9:39 mark, a serious accident occurs as an aircraft crash lands, wrecking the Autogyro. The National Air Races of 1930 took place at Chicago’s Curtiss-Reynolds airfield from 23 August to 1 September. Flight magazine reported that there were “about 34 races spread over the ten days, in addition to many other events on each day’s programme” and that, with the exception of the races, each day’s programme of events was much the same. The daily events included glider contests and demonstration flights, balloon-bursting competitions, dead-stick landing contests, exhibitions by Army, Navy and Marine Corps’ aircraft, parachute jumping contests, civilian aerobatic exhibitions and flights by the renowned American pilot “Jimmy” Doolittle. Plus, of course, Al Williams and the ‘foreign pilots.’ Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
