This black and white educational film is about machine shop work and scraping and adjusting bearings. It was made as part of a massive WWII educational campaign, which aimed to create workers for the war effort. Copyright 1942. Opening titles: Planned and distributed by the Federal Security Agency. Machine Shop Work - Bench Work, Fitting and Scraping Small Bearings (:08-:55). Machines have rotating parts which are supported by bearings. Different bearing sizes are shown. Bearings on a normal automobile engine. Cap of each bearing is removed. Body of the supporting bearings (:56-1:57). Bearings must support a turning shaft. Animation shows how this works and explains. Oil inside a bearing (1:58-3:18). A shaft supported by two split bearings. Three scrapers to use on bearings. Scrapers must be sharp to leave a true surface. A man cleans a shaft. The shaft is laid in the bearings and lubed (3:19-5:35). Inside a bearing, a pencil points at areas. Different size scrapers. Scraper removes metal inside a bearing. Scraper continues to remove metal. Man wipes the bearings clean. Puts the shaft in and turns it (5:36-7:16). Shaft is in the bearings. Prussian blue is placed on the split bearings. Split bearings pieced together over the shaft, bolts are lightly tightened (7:17-8:58). Markings indicate where scraper should scrap. Scraper at work. Shaft is tightened (8:59-10:13). Blue markings in the top of the split bearing. Scraper scraps. Shaft is removed. Split bearings are looked at (10:14-11:41). Animation of the bearings. A scraper scraps and this is explained via animation. Oil pockets on both sides of the bearing. Shaft clearance (11:42-13:09). Oil grooves are placed in the bearing. A scriber is then used. A chisel is chipped in the groove. A scraper removes some metal (13:10-14:47). Shaft in the bearings. Shaft turns freely. Shaft is put into a solid bearing, this is fit by hand scraping. Shaft is placed into solid bearings. Prussian Blue is applied to the shaft (14:48-16:33). Blue ink is more prominent on one side than the other. A scraper is to be used to make both bearings the same size. Prussian blue is placed on the shaft again and inserted to be checked. It seems more lined up this time (16:34-17:47). Scraper is used again on one end. Bearings are cleaned and shaft is inserted once more. Shaft turns freely and fitting is completed. Fitting and scraping of bearings is very important in bench work.
