This is from a series called 'Experiment' and is from 1966. Opening titles: Net Science presents The Attack Patterns Of Sharks on Experiment, featuring Dr. Perry Gilbert of Cornell, professor of Zoology (:08-1:04). A large shark followed a trawler for a few days and then was finally caught. The contents of its stomach are on display. Sharks eat people as well. Gruesome case files are mentioned (1:05-3:05). Dr. Gilbert sits at his desk. He has been searching all over the world to study the attack patterns of sharks. There are about 250 species of sharks, 35 are dangerous to man. Dangerous sharks like warmer waters (3:06-4:30). A lot of sharks are off the coast of Bimini, 53 air miles east of Miami. Fishermen off the coast. Baited hooks are thrown into the ocean. After a few hours, the hooks that had food are empty, one remaining hook has a tiger shark on it. They maneuver the tiger shark into retriever so it can be studied (4:31-7:12). A laboratory at the dock is going to look at the shark but they first have to remove the hook from the shark's mouth and not damage the shark or get bit. The shark starts to swim in a pen (7:13-8:40). Dr. Gilbert looks at a shark's brain. The shark smells its way to food. Back in Bimini, Dr. Gilbert performs a smell test for this shark to prove his theory. A sponge soaked with salt water vs a one soaked with juice is conducted and the shark circles and goes after the one with juice (8:41-12:07). An electrode test is to be conducted, first the shark must be put to sleep, the electrode is sutured into the shark while it's asleep. The charm is then placed back into water (12:08-14:18). Questions about a shark's eyes during an attack are discussed. Dr. Gilbert looks at sharks in the pen in Bimini. Another test is conducted to put the shark to sleep and they block the eye of the shark (so the shark cannot see but without hurting the cornea) (14:19-18:03). The shark is woke up and placed in the pen. A chunk of marlin is placed in the pen. The experiment is to see if the shark can find prey without seeing, relying on other senses. Dr. Gilbert films from a shark cage. The shark gets near the prey, over the course of four hours, but doesn't attack. Vision guides a shark to target is the hypothesis (18:04-20:24). At long range, sharks pick up on vibrations. At short range, smell is what lures the shark in (20:25-21:13). Closing comments followed by end credits (21:14-22:20). Perry Webster Gilbert (December 1, 1912 – October 15, 2000) was a professor at Cornell University, shark scientist, and former Director of Mote Marine Laboratory. He pioneered the capture and study of live sharks and for several decades was considered one of the world's foremost experts on shark anatomy and behavior. Over the course of his life, Gilbert published two books and approximately 150 scientific papers. As a recipient of both Carnegie and Guggenheim Fellowships and chair of the American Institute of Biological Sciences' Shark Research Panel, Gilbert travelled the world to better learn and understand shark behavior.
