These planes, bearing a square H tail code, appear to be from the 98th Bombardment Group, 343rd Bomb Squadron. The 343rd BS saw combat operations from Aug. 7, 1950 to July 25, 1953. The squadron participated in Korea campaigns including the UN Defensive; UN Offensive; CCF Intervention; First UN Counteroffensive; CCF Spring Offensive; UN Summer-Fall Offensive; Second Korean Winter; Korea Summer-Fall, 1953; Third Korean Winter and Korea Summer-Fall, 1953. The 343rd BS earned the Distinguished Unit Citation for actions in Korea, Dec. 1, 1952 - April 30, 1953, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation: Aug. 7, 1950-July 27, 1953. During the conflict B-29s flew over 21,000 sorties, dropping nearly 167,000 tons of bombs. Despite their impressive record, B-29s faced stiff resistance from the Soviet-made MiG-15 fighter jets over North Korea. Officially, 34 B-29s were lost, with sixteen falling to enemy fighters, four to anti-aircraft fire, and the rest to various other causes. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
