Airlines West Germany, Rhineland” is a promotional feature for the German airlines, S.A.S. taking viewers on a trip aboard an SAS DC-6 from New York International Airport at Idlewild (renamed following the assassination of JFK in 1963) to Hamburg, Germany. It is a scenic journey through time and landscape over golden hayfields of the Black Forest region, the flowing Moselle wine district while capturing historic festivals, local attire, Scandinavian treats and famed castles. It is a post war view of Germany with some historic sights showing war damage. It begins with the comfortable flight, narration notes amenities of the airline and continues down the Romantic Road, a 350 km route through the forests and mountains of Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg. Narration cuts over castle riddled portions of the Rhine. German pageants, famous beach resorts, the autobahn, soccer games in southern Germany, Baker’s Fest and Oktoberfest are included. Peter Allen narrates (:07). It begins at Idlewild (:14) with the four engine SAS DC-6 (:25). Travelers enjoy luxury seating in the cabin (1:24). Stewardesses deliver Scandinavian favorites for lunch (1:30). The tour begins at Hamburg, Germany’s largest seaport (2:31). The War Memorial at Dammtor (3:02) and the Hamburg Hopfenmarkt (3:09) are featured. Blue waters of Alster Lake (3:26) follow. A traffic cop (3:38) guides pedestrians. Close shots pass over the Port of Hamburg (4:00) on the Elbe jammed with ocean liners, tankers and freighters (4:09). Sunbathers enjoy the sand (5:41) along the Trave river. Modern automobiles run over the autobahn (6:02) from Lubeck towards Dusseldorf. A map notes the travel route (6:29). Towers of the Cathedral of Cologne prick the sky (7:16). Locals move through the marketplace in the old city of Bonn (7:22); the birthplace of Beethoven. The Siebengebirge rise in the background (7:39). At the junction of the Rhine and the Moselle in Koblenz, the tour continues through the sun soaked wine district (9:06). Narration touches on wine production (9:16), harvesters pluck fruits (9:26), crates of grapes are carted off for large vats (9:41). Another portion of the Rhine (10:24) is castle riddled including the Pflazgrafentien (11:34). It continues towards the University City of Marburg once home to Philip the Magnanimous. The city is depicted as the traditional German pastoral town; the first protestant church was erected here. Locals wear traditional German garb (12:13). Golden hay fields blanket the Black Forest Region (12:18). Vibrant German colors explode for festivals in Gengenbach (12:51). Another summer festival; “The Master Drink” plays in the Town Hall area of Rodenberg (13:31). The “Dance of the Shepard” twirls through Market Square (13:51). Baker’s Festival follows (14:26) accompanied by the traditional soccer match between the chimney sweepers and the bakers (14:53). The next section rolls through southern Germany (15:11) to the lakes and Alps of southern Bavaria. A map notes the route (15:41) ends in Munich. Sailboats drift over Lake Constance (15:57). Resort hotels bank the shores (16:12). Guests lavish on Scandinavian treats and local wines (16:22). Locals move through open air markets of Lindau in front of the City Museum (16:36). The Lindau Harbor (16:55) follows. Shots pass over the Bavarian Alps (17:52) including the town of Fussen (18:01). Oxen drawn carts move over cobblestones of the village square (18:08).Two Royal castles rim the city; the Neuschwanstein (18:24) and the Hohenschwangau (18:32). Stunning architecture is captured of the Strassenbild in Oberammergau (18:41). Locals prepare for the Passion Play (18:54). Alois Lang Hotel (19:14) and Alois Lang himself are pictured (19:21). Garmisch-Partenkirchen (19:47) hosted the 1936 Olympics. The Zugspitze (19:53) can be reached by elevator (20:00). Travelers float on the Konigssee towards Berchtesgaden (20:21) past the Bartholomew Chapels (20:41). Locals wear traditional attire in Berchtesgaden (21:22). Colorful Bad Reichenahll (21:34) festivals follow. Allen leaves a Lowenbrau Brewery (23:30) for Munich and the Oktoberfest (23:40). Germans enjoy carnival rides (23:56).
