This was not an altogether uncommon use for the rugged WWII aircraft, given that their design allowed for the addition of a large tank underneath the pilot cockpit in what had been the bomb bay / torpedo area. This specific aircraft tail # N8397H, is now apparently at the War Eagles Air Museum in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. The on-line record indicates it was a 1945 Grumman TBF-1. Another site lists it as TBM-3E. Construction number 2198. The pilot of the aircraft shown in the film was Captain James Lynden Betts, a highly distinguished aviator.
