<description>In the 1974 sci-fi comedy Dark Star (directed by John Carpenter), Thermostellar Bomb #20 receives a faulty detonation order and begins its countdown while still attached to the ship. After failed attempts to override the bomb through the ship's systems, Lieutenant Doolittle goes outside to reason with it directly. Doolittle tries to teach the bomb phenomenology -- the philosophical idea that we can only know the world through our senses, and our senses can be deceived. He argues that the bomb cannot trust that the detonation order it received was real, since all of its inputs come through sensors that could be malfunctioning. The bomb appears to follow the logic and agrees to stand down. However, the bomb takes the philosophy too far. Applying Cartesian doubt, it arrives at "I think, therefore I am" and concludes that since it cannot verify anything exists outside of itself, it must be the only thing that truly exists. The bomb decides it is God, and that detonation is the act of creation. It announces "Let there be light!"</description>
