Hughes, a famous air show pilot in the 1970s who was inducted into the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Hall of Fame in 2010. Hughes, born in Texas, developed the Boeing-Hughes Super Stearman plane and was known for his wing walking acts. Joe C. Hughes passed away in 2017. His first Super Stearman now resides in the EAA Aviation Hall of Fame in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The film begins with a wing walker standing on top of a biplane in flight as it descends (0:30); title card "Dare to Climb" at 0:39. A Boeing-Hughes Super Stearman plane taking off; Hughes narrates that he first got into an airplane at the age of 38 (0:57) after a friend told him to find a hobby. Hughes walks towards a Cessna N60030 plane and gets in with an instructor (2:16). He says he first started flight lessons at Orange County Airport in Santa Ana, California. The Cessna takes off (3:53). Hughes, in a red flight suit, inspects and boards a Super Stearman biplane (4:17). The Stearman was used as a trainer in World War II, but Hughes made modifications to the engine (with a 1340 Pratt Whitney) to improve its aerobatic capabilities. Hughes turns on the engine, pulls the throttle, and flicks a smoke switch as he takes off (6:00). He does a loop-and-roll and inverted flight maneuver (6:12); continued aerobatics through 8:20. Hughes talks about learning to do loops and experiencing G-forces (8:23). Hughes lands the plane at 10:40. Hughes and a wing walker, Donna, bring the plane out of an Aero-Tech hangar (11:10). A closeup of the plane's tail, with "Super Stearman Wing-Walker Special Beverly Hills, California" on the side (11:27). Hughes and Donna inspect and secure a wing-walker rack on top of the plane (12:34); Hughes explains he looks for low-weight gymnasts for wing walkers. Donna practices moves for a horizontal handstand (13:38) and headstand (14:28) while the plane is on the ground. Hughes and Donna shake hands before taking off (16:07). A wing walker stands on the plane as it goes upside-down and does an 8-point roll (17:48). Hughes performs more loops and aerobatics (19:02). On top of the plane, Donna lifts one leg behind her back (19:54), does a handstand (20:45), and a horizontal handstand (21:30). The film ends with more footage of the Stearman as it lets out a trail of smoke (23:28). Filmed in Minneapolis with the cooperation of Gateway North Industrial Airport, Aero-Tech, Inc., Federal Aviation Administration. Produced by Sports Films & Talents, Inc. for Concept Productions Minneapolis, MN. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
