<description>This Vietnam era propaganda film displays Operation Golden Fleece. This mission was carried out by the US Marines in 1965 and 1966. The intention of the operation was to protect the rice harvest in the Mo Duc District from Vietcong forces. During this time period, the Viet Cong entered villages at night and taxed the villagers in rice in order to fortify the Northern Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong themselves. Marine operations were designed to protect the villager’s rice harvests while simultaneously denying food to the enemy forces. It was considered to be a civic action mission designed to win “hearts and minds” of the Vietnamese people. This operation was considered to be less than successful however as they weren’t fully able to protect the villagers. A Vietnamese official was tortured to death for aiding the Marines. The operation was carried out by the first battalion, 9th regiment of the United States Marine Corps in the Song Con Bien Valley. This film was presented by the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps (:10). The US Marine seal appears in the top left corner. The film opens with gunfire popping as a Vietnamese woman carries a small child across a dirt field (:21). Marines guide civilians to safety (:34). A marine stands out of the hatch on the M48 (4:27). A Viet Cong member is searched (4:39). His weapons are examined (5:18). Prisoners are bound (5:25). A great shot watches the tanks as they roll past lush blue waves; mountains line the background (5:57). Injured villagers and youth (6:21) are lifted by the Sikorsky H-34 (6:27). The chopper lands on an air craft carrier (6:53). Litters are taken to carry the wounded (6:56). Rice is harvested in the field (8:07) as the ‘rice tax’ is discussed (8:07). Rice is loaded onto amphibious tractors (8:23). Villagers are brought in from the field to the collection point (8:36). Vietnamese are searched for weapons (9:04). Youth are given medical treatment (9:36). Food supplies are handed out (10:01). A young boy gives a Marine a bottle of wine (10:36). Servicemen and Vietnamese store the rice for safe keeping (10:50). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
