<description>Support Our Channel : https://www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Created by the Air Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, "Development of a Rocket Power Plant" shows the development of an early JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off) rocket bottle system for use with the B-29 aircraft. In this configuration, known as RATO (Rocket Assisted Take Off) the bottles use liquid fuel that included Nitrite acid and gasoline, a far more dangerous design than later, solid-fuel models. As seen in the film, the bottles allow a 148,000 pound gross weight B-29 bomber to take off from a runway at Muroc, now known as Edwards Air Force Base, a whopping 3000 feet less than without the rockets. The film discusses the development of jet-assisted takeoff systems for B-29 aircraft by the Air Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It highlights the challenges of achieving maximum speed, range, and payload due to the need for longer runways. The solution involved using rocket power plants to provide additional thrust during takeoff. The video details the impact of temperature and elevation on takeoff distances, the design and assembly of the rocket power plants, and the testing and installation process. It also covers the successful reduction of ground roll distances and the benefits of rocket-assisted takeoff for increasing payload without increasing runway length. Future improvements and applications for other military aircraft are also discussed. 00:00 Introduction to the takeoff problem of military aircraft, affecting performance and efficiency. 0:53 - Explanation of how runway lengths have been increased to achieve maximum speed, range, and payload. 1:00 - Study by the Air Material Command indicating rocket power plants as a solution for auxiliary thrust. 1:46 - Description of the B-29's takeoff challenges due to temperature and elevation. 2:20 - Impact of temperature on the length of ground roll for the B-29. 3:41 - Impact of elevation on the length of ground roll for the B-29. 4:39 - Engineers at Wright Patterson Air Force Base tasked with reducing the B-29's ground roll. 5:00 - Rocket power identified as the solution, leading to the design and manufacture of rocket power plants. 6:00 - Components and assembly of the rocket power plant. 7:29 - Installation of the thrust chamber assembly and propellant tanks. 8:37 - Description of the propellants used and their reaction. 9:10 - Field transportation and fueling of the rocket power plant. 10:00 - Safety measures during fueling and servicing. 11:00 - Acid servicing procedure. 11:43 - Test firing of the rocket power plant. 13:21 - Installation of rocket power plants on a B-29 at Muro Air Force Base. 14:01 - Ground inspection and arming of the rockets before takeoff. 15:21 - Takeoff procedure with rocket assistance, reducing ground roll significantly. 16:01 - Comparison of ground roll distances with and without rocket assistance. 17:14 - Analysis of the benefits of rocket-assisted takeoff for increasing payload. 18:01 - Future improvements and applications of rocket power plants for other military aircraft.
