The F-104G Starfighter then in use by the Luftwaffe suffered from a high accident rate, and was not considered a good Marine aircraft. The success of the A7 in Vietnam made the airplane very attractive, but while the Luftwaffe considered using the A-7 Corsair II to replace the F-104, it was eventually abandoned as a concept. Both Greece and Portugal, as well as Thailand, did operate A-7s with Greece retiring the last aircraft in 2014. Footage includes dramatic footage of the A-7 flying over mountains and lakes, at 1:40 performing bombing missions in Vietnam, operating off aircraft carriers and performing other missions. The aircraft's heads-up display (8:44; 10:00 and following) and modern armament is shown including at 3:50 its M61A1 rotary cannon. It also features a sophisticated navigation package seen at 6:55. The LTV A-7 Corsair II is an American carrier-capable subsonic light attack aircraft designed by Ling-Temco-Vought to replace the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. Its airframe design was a somewhat smaller version of the supersonic Vought F-8 Crusader. The Corsair II initially entered service with the United States Navy (USN) during the Vietnam War. It was later adopted by the United States Air Force (USAF), including the Air National Guard, to replace the Douglas A-1 Skyraider and North American F-100 Super Sabre. The aircraft was also exported to Greece in the 1970s, and to Portugal in the late 1980s.
