The Apollo 10 mission served as the dress rehearsal for the soon to follow lunar landing; Apollo 11. This mission was the fourth human spaceflight of the Apollo program and second to orbit the moon. The mission launched May 18, 1969 crewed by Thomas Stafford, John W. Young and Eugene Cernan. Named after the character in the Peanuts comic strip, "Charlie Brown" was the nickname of the Apollo 10 command module. The lunar module was nicknamed "Snoopy" because it was designed to "snoop" around the future landing site of Apollo 11. 00:00 Fashion of the era is exemplified; (:11) women wearing big hair and 1960’s pastel dresses open the feature. The navy brass band blows (:14). A Charlie Brown banner (:29) welcomes friends to the address (:29). Peanuts characters were used as call signs for the mission. The creator of the Peanuts gang; Charles Schultz created a number of works for mission including the banner. Scenes pass around the stadium seats (:35); spectators wave for the camera. 1960’s era muscle cars drive in (:53). Spectators throw rice commemorating the occasion (1:10) as NASA officials and Apollo crew members move down a red carpeted entry. The press captures the occasion (1:46). Thomas Stafford (2:00) walks with rice confetti on his shoulders shaking hands with various officials (2:07). Eugene Cernan follows behind (2:08). The Navy band continues as crew members take the podium (2:15). Another angle captures a backstage view (2:29). Wide shots pass over a jammed crowd (2:39). Shots watch as Stafford and Cernan settles into their seats behind the podium (3:21). Stafford leaves stage (3:24). Close shots watch Cernan (3:32) and Stafford’s movements (3:36). John Young (3:43) appears. Stafford and Young look over documents (3:47); confetti glitter still remaining on their suits. Police patrol on motorcycles (4:08). Police escort astronauts (4:16). Clear shots show the astronauts on stage again (5:25). Various officials take the podium (5:49). The three main crew members sit next to one another (6:03). Stafford stands at the podium (6:33). Young makes an address (6:48). Cernan is the final astronaut to address the crowd (7:14). The camera pans over the Navy band and brown suited servicemen in the crowd (7:22). Close shots follow of the astronauts (7:34) just prior to the film’s conclusion. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
