        <description>Special thanks to Chris Causley, President of the Michigan Military Technical &amp; Historical Society and author of the book "The Battle of Allegan" for providing information about this film. This black and white, home movie footage shows the end of the 1936 Second Army Maneuvers field exercise, between 18-21 August 1936 at Fort Custer, now the Fort Custer Training Center,. A few shots can be nailed down to the 20 August demonstration at Harbord Hill. The troops conduct a full scale military exercise, camping in the field, sleeping in tents, and operating tanks and armored cars in co-ordination with aircraft. 00:00:00 to 00:00:37 Thursday, 20 August 1936. Aerial Review, Ft Custer these are probably the 18 B10B bombers from the 20th, 49th, and 96th Bombardment Squadrons departed Selfridge Field to do a flyover at Custer before returning to Langley Field. 00:00:37 to 00:00:46 Thursday, 20 August 1936. Aerial Review, Ft Custer The nine A12 aircraft from the 8th Attack Squadron launched from Selfridge to do the flyover, before returning to their home station at Barksdale, Louisiana. 00:00:47 to 00:02:54 125th Infantry, 32nd Division. The 32nd was bivouacked near Galesburg, MI at the conclusion of the Second Army Maneuvers, it looks like they are breaking camp. The guidon looks like it has HZ on it This was likely the Special Troops section, which was a Detroit based unit. 00:02:55 to 00:03:08 Scout cars of the 1 st Cavalry Regiment. The two guys with the white hatbands would have been an Maneuver Umpire. 00:03:08 to 00:03:17 75mm gun crew. 00:03:18 to 00:03:48 M1 Combat Cars of the 1 st Cavalry Regiment on the move 00:03:48 to 00:03:58 Looks like a continuation of the 125th infantry segment 00:00:47 to 00:02:54 probably should be with that footage. 00:03:58 to 00:04:52 20 August 1936. Cavalry Demonstration, Ft Custer. Troops gather on Harbord Hill to watch the event, It was estimated that 25,000 soldiers and 15,000 civilians gathered on Camp Custer’s Harbord Hill, using it as a sort of grandstand for the mornings events. 00:04:52 to 00:04:58 20 August 1936. Cavalry Demonstration, Ft Custer. 1 st Cavalry Regiment Mortars Fire near Harbord Hill. 00:04:59 to 00:05:18 1st Cavalry M1 Combat Cars advance behind a smoke screen at the Harbord Hill Demonstration. 00:05:19 to 00:05:39 20 August 1936. Cavalry Demonstration, Ft Custer. More troops on Harbord Hill, panning to 1st Cav M1 Combat cars deployed in the field. 00:05:40 to 00:06:00 Soldiers stand for inspection in front of pup tents. Based on the uniforms, these are likely 1st Cavalry Regiment troopers. 00:06:00 to 00:06:33 Wide shot of the camp. 00:06:33 to 00:07:06 Soldiers mount trucks to depart the maneuvers 00:07:06 to 00:07:18 Cars, one is a model T, the rest appear to be Ford Sedans the Army rented 195 Ford 5 passenger sedans for the maneuver, these may be some of those cars. 00:07:18 to end. Soldiers clown for the camera probably from 1st Cavalry. Opening: Military planes in the sky (:09), possibly Curtiss A-12 Shrikes or . A flag waves at base camp, it reads 125 HZ (:46), probably the 125th Infantry Division. Servicemen fool around for the camera; they smile, laugh, and goof around (:51). A soldier smoking a cigarette walks towards the camera (1:46). Smoke surrounds men near raised tents (1:59). Men on the field; two men play fight (2:30). Soldiers rest on the ground (2:41). At (3:00) is what appears to be a T10 "Palmer" Armored Car, designed by Col. Bruce Palmer. (If it is a T10 it was one of only 3 produced!) A soldier works on a howitzer (3:07). Brand new M-2 light tanks (first introduced in 1935) race by quickly on a road (3:17). At (3:43) they sit in a row with armored cars. Two men wrestle on grass (3:49). Soldiers march up a hill (4:00). View from a hill (4:15). Army cars -- the Jeep had yet to be developed -- and soldiers on a hill (4:52). Soldiers do maneuvers as seen from a hill (5:01). Soldiers lined up in front of their tents are inspected by officers (5:40). Tents (6:07). Soldiers mill about (6:33). Soldiers in a moving truck look at the camera; some fool around (6:41) while another sleeps. A car goes down the road (7:08). Soldiers stand around, some wave (7:19).
