It begins with Ferdinand Schulz breaking his own record for flying a glider for over 14 hours in Koenigsberg, Germany. At 1:00, "Cleaning the Colosseum" shows a gardener dealing with weeds at the ancient Roman Coliseum in Rome. At 2:10, a "Stunt on Stilts" in Chicago as a man on stilts walks across exposed beams of a skyscraper. At 2:51, "Commander Byrd and the America" shows Admiral Richard C. Byrd and his famous aircraft before attempting to make a flight from Roosevelt Field, New York to Paris. Joining him in the attempt are Bert Acosta, George Noville and Berndt Balchen. The film ends with the aircraft taking off. America was a Fokker C-2 trimotor monoplane that was flown in 1927 by Richard E. Byrd, Bernt Balchen, George Otto Noville, and Bert Acosta on their transatlantic flight. The America was destroyed after it was ditched near the French village of Ver-sur-Mer, having flown to Paris but being unable to land due to fog Ferdinand Schulz Jr. was a German aviator and glider pilot who broke a contemporary record by gliding and staying aloft for 14 hours and 7 minutes. He popularized hang-gliding in Germany and was called the "Icarus von Ostpreußen". On June 16, 1929 Schulz crashed over the city of Stuhm along with Bruno Kaiser, while taking part in the ceremonial opening of a monument to those who fell in World War I. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
