        <description>"The Big Picture" was a U.S. Army television show which ran from 1951 to 1964. It was produced by the Signal Corps. Albert C. Gannaway Jr. and David Burkey conceived the show as a way to employ film footage accumulated from the Army Pictorial Service to be delivered for commercial TV. This episode features the General of Armies; John Joseph Black Pershing. Pershing was a senior US army officer who served as Commander of the American Expeditionary force (AEF). The AEF served on the western front of WW1. Although historians have questions his tactics in war today; it is commonly known he led the AEF to victory in WW1 and served as mentor to many generals who led WW2. Walter Matthau opens the film (:11) with Pershing’s youth (2:03). He was born in Missouri in 1860 and attended West Point (2:58). His portrait in 1886 at 25 (3:06) from graduation follows. Warfare between rebellious Native American clans and US soldiers erupt (3:32). Pershing served in the Calvary as Lieutenant (3:46). He served as a leader of Indian scouts (4:00) and later as military instructor (4:17) at West Point. Footage follows of American ships (4:33) wasting in the Havana harbor. American troops land in Cuba (4:38). Thomas Edison released this footage. The 10th Calvary was recognized (4:52). Pershing was sighted for personal valor (5:00). Newspaper clippings inform the public of combat in Manila (5:28). Pershing appears on assignment (5:37) to subdue a fierce tribe causing trouble following the Spanish American war (5:46). Teddy Roosevelt (6:00) applauds Perishing. He appears in 1905 (6:08) serving as US observer between Japan and Russia where he was promoted to Brigadier General. He commanded the south western division in 1915 (6:25) along the Mexican border. Clippings tell of tragedy (6:42); wife and three daughters perished in a fire. He marches ahead of the punitive expedition in Mexico (7:04) in pursuit of “Pancho” Villa. President Woodrow Wilson (8:35) makes an address to congress upon entering the war. The Commander in Chief arrives by boat in June (9:13). The country mobilized for the war in 1917 (9:35). A fighting tune plays as soldiers drop from transport vessels (11:24). Pershing shakes hands with army forces in France (12:04). Troops aim bayonets from trenches (12:28). The German drove to separate the Germans from the French (13:27). Black explosions erupt over dirt (13:31). A grenade is tossed (14:13), German tanks swing in (14:16). Pershing and Marshall Foch are pictured (14:26). The city of Cantigny is highlighted (14:44) as Allied forces moved in to stop the German drive (14:49). The German push for towards Rheims is shown in animation on a map (15:23). The Renault FT (15:33) climbs up a trench. Soldier’s spring out (15:41) after. AEF 2nd and 3rd division makes a mine crossing (15:48). Footage follows of the Battle of Belleau Wood (16:15). Men of the 8 participating divisions wait in line for food supplies (16:50). The Saint-Mihiel offensive took off on September 12th, 1918 (17:42). Forces pound up slopes of San Juan hill (18:36). The final assault was against the German Rhine (19:18) from the Meuse River to the Argonne Valley (19:21). The New York Times headlines boasts the wars concludes (20:45). Allied forces celebrate on November 11th (20:52). Americans celebrate (21:05). Pershing receives decoration from nine foreign governments (21:24).  Pershing remained stationed in Europe alongside President Wilson (21:31). Wilson appears among the diplomats from the Versailles meeting of four (21:33). Clemenceau of France, Lord George of Britain and Orlando of Italy (21:38) are pictured. Pershing prepares to leave Europe (21:51). Pershing leads a march from the capital (22:05) as he earned title General of the Armies of the US (22:07). He later became Chief of Staff of the Army of 1921 (22:15). Marshall Foch pays a visit to the US (22:24). A casket carrying a body of the Unknown Soldier arrives in France (22:48). Perishing’s retirement speech of 1924 follows (23:11). Roosevelt (24:45) compliments Pershing. His casket appears under a US flag in 1948 (25:06).
