        <description>This 1960s black-and-white documentary is about Australia’s involvement in World War I. Artillery is fired. Australian troops scramble out of trenches. Shells explode (:30-:40). The Australian War Memorial walls are panned, including the list of 61,000 killed.  A wall of files in the Repatriation Department is panned. A man pulls a file out of a wall of files. The typewritten document of a soldier’s history in WW1 is shown (:41-1:55). College men wearing suits and straw hats sign-up at a recruiting table. A cowboy on horseback turns into cavalry.  Soldiers practice loading rifles. Soldiers march down a long street lined with crowds of people (1:56-3:09). Australian troops march to board transport ships, carrying duffel bags. Shipboard troops smile and wave.  The HMAT Benalla (A24) departs (3:10-4:01). The troops are shown in Egypt at the Sphinx (1914). Troops build camps (4:02-4:36). The Dardanelles are panned.  Troops arriving in rowboats are shot at during the Gallipoli Campaign. A destroyer’s cannons fire to provide cover. Troops scramble out of rowboats and run past wounded and dead soldiers on the sand. Trenches are reinforced (4:37-6:47). A diorama’s figures representing WWI are shown up-close (6:48-7:00). Soldiers carry wounded soldiers and depart in rowboats (6:48-7:43). Australian cavalry ride their horses through sand. General Harry Chauvel wears a large feather on his hat. A draftsman plots. Soldiers reload and fire cannons. Prisoners of war are marched over sand. Troops ride camels, accompanied by horses pulling wagons, and camels holding the wounded, into Beersheba (7:44-9:26). The troops and horses drink from an aqueduct. The wounded are treated by medics wearing armbands (9:27-9:41). Wagons are pulled through floodwaters. Camels with packs are guided across rapidly moving water (9:42-10:14). Artillery is fired and the ground explodes in multiple frames. Troops run while the ground explodes around them.  Troops crawl, duck into trenches, and walk across the field while under fire. Troops encounter barbed wire. A soldier running across a makeshift plank over a trench is hit and falls in (10:15-13:12).  Dead soldiers are shown lying where they fell. Troops take what they can from the dead bodies before burial. Troops march, helping their wounded. Wounded are stretchers are placed in a long row to be looked at by medics (13:13-15:04). Troops push a cannon through mud and walk through trenches. Little Willie tanks are shown (15:05-15:31). Soldiers in trenches put their gas masks on. Mustard gas in shells is fired. Troops cross a field under fire, some falling as they are hit. (15:32-15:53). A giant explosion of dirt fills the screen. Soldiers slide down into trenches. A bayonet is used against an enemy soldier. Soldiers walk over dead soldiers in the trench (13:54-17:20). German soldiers are taken prisoner as they leave a foxhole. The wounded are treated by medics (17:21-18:05). Large crowds celebrate the end of WWI. Smiling troops return (18:06-18:40). Elderly survivors wait at a clinic. A 1960s secretary greets them. Elderly survivors march in a parade past a memorial with their hats held across their chests (18:41-19:56).
