It provides a glimpse into the local art scene of SoCal. Both cities were blooming into hubs for culture and contemporary art hosting exhibitions and fostering local talent. The Sunset Strip was emerging as a rock epicenter. The pair were affected by growth spurts due to the post war boom, rapid suburbanization and rise of the automobile culture. SoCal was becoming more smog laden affected by increased pollution. It opens at the new LA Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG); a pioneering city funded institution dedicated to aiding the careers of emerging artists. It opened in 1954 at Barnsdall Art Park. The shows featured were a part of the “All City Outdoor Art Festivals” organized by the Municipal Art Department. The group takes a car ride down Cabrillo Blvd. in Santa Barbara for an art show near the Santa Barbara Harbor; another burgeoning site for new artists. Footage also features the Hollywood sign, the Old Santa Barbara Mission, Hollywood’s Grover Street, Statler Hilton Hotel, Downtown LA’s Subway Terminal Building, LA’s notorious freeway system and a THOR missile on display at Griffith Observatory. It is a blend of personal and regional history mixing affectionate scenes between kin and shots of cultural hotspots showcasing an era lost in time. 00:00 Film opens with the 6th annual art show held on July 25-27 (:08) at LAMAG. The group poses (:13). Footage captures a personal view of the emerging art style sweeping the small vendor stands (:44). Musicians play by paintings (:53). Macabre (1:26), vibrant (1:45) and abstract paintings (2:32) fill the arena. A painted clown (2:37) holds and accordion. Youth dance around him and he kicks his ankles back (2:42). They return in August (2:54). The shows became foundation for connectivity between local artists and the community. A school bus sits next to a Ford Thunderbird (3:14). Barnsdall Art Park (3:15) is a historic 11.5 acre park in East Hollywood well known for Frank Wright’s Hollyhock Museum. It provides views of the Hollywood sign (3:28). They tour more art stalls (4:19, 4:29, 4:43, 4:58). Musicians accompany works with piano tunes (5:39). Footage drives down Sunset Strip littered with vintage cars (6:41). They pull up on the Old Mission Santa Barbara (6:50). The ‘Queen of the Missions’ was founded in 1786 by Padre Lasuen. It’s neoclassical façade and twin towers were recently rebuilt and reinforced with limestone. The Santa Ynez Mountains rise behind (6:56). The El Camino Real bell (7:13) hangs as part of the historic marker system from 1906 designed to highlight the 600-mile California mission trail. A Franciscan Friar (7:36) works to maintain the grounds. Evening scenes capture Santa Barbara harbor along Cabrillo Blvd. as they head towards another art show (8:09). Locals and a Franciscan Friar (8:17-8:39) enjoy the outdoor stalls. Close shots show clowns and religious figures (8:59). Shots pan over the harbor, coastline (9:28) crowded sidewalks and harbor area (9:36-9:49 & 9:59). A female figure models towards the camera (10:26). A man in a flannel follows in a mock fashion sidewalk show (11:01). They take the car down Grover Street (11:21) past the Allied Artists studio heading north from Sunset Blvd. They continue down the Hollywood Freeway (US Route 101) for downtown LA (11:37). Within view is the LA Civic Center, LA’s City Hall, the Hall of Justice, and the Federal Building. They continue towards the Bunker Hill neighborhood area passing Statler Hilton Hotel (12:11) modernly known as the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The car approaches the Subway Terminal Building (12:16) at 417 Hill St. Back on the highway, they pass the junction for Pasadena, Hollywood, San Bernardino and Santa Ana (the “San Bernardino split”). They head for one of the Figueroa Street tunnels (12:45-12:56). It concludes with a USAF (13:27) THOR missile built by Douglas Aircraft Corporation (13:35) at Griffith Observatory (13:47).
