<description>This black and white film is one of a 1950-1960 television series Industry on Parade, produced by the National Association of Manufacturers. Instead of the usual multiple segments, this is a single segment “Making Contact” about communication among the industrial workforce. An automobile factory worker finger whistles, pats his head, and his side. A worker makes a signal like pulling a horn to indicate more doors are needed, shown stacked. Putting your fingers around your eyes signals for more headlights. Additional gestures are shown (:11-1:25). Parts manufacturer WRAP has a radio station in the factory as its master control room. A gentleman uses an attached handset to communicate about the statistics on one of the many boards. A supervisor carries a walkie-talkie in a carry bag to tell floor workers the messages. Additional machines are in offices, which the control room contacts (1:26-2:30). A California company uses a closed-circuit TV system to convey information to employees, shown watching the show on TVs in the factory. GM Futurama is filmed, which includes an orchestra and stage show that is televised to theatres. Employees in suits stand up after a televised presentation by an executive (2:31-4:02). A hand-held motion picture camera is used in training films (4:03-4:25). The Atlantic City Electric Company uses an early Bell recording device to record messages to employees. A female desk worker dials 277 on a rotary desk telephone to hear the recording, as do other employees (4:26-5:20). Notices are posted on a bulletin board, information put into a shared reading rack, and a man puts a piece of paper into a suggestion box (5:21-6:00). A supervisor checks with workers. A junior board of directors meets at a long table. Maintenance personnel in a railroad shop discuss changes using a model of the factory (6:01-7:23). At the Robert Shaw Controls Company, an executive stands in front and talks to seated foremen. A woman reporter interviews a worker for a company magazine. Photos are taken. The editor and artist work on the cover design for the Relief Valve. The final layout is approved. Past covers are shown, each with a moving or removable part. Inside a 1950s living room, the mother, wearing a dress and large pearls, reads the company magazine. The father looks at his son’s pop gun. The daughter hugs a dog (7:24-13:05).
