Its idyllic portrayal of rural life in this region includes activities such as farming, carpentry, animal husbandry, etc. This film was made while the Fascists were in power, and around the ten minute mark, variations on the symbol of the Fascist party begin to appear (TRIGGER WARNING). The film was produced for the The Reichsanstalt für Film und Bild in Wissenschaft und Unterricht (Reich Institute for Film and Images in Science and the Classroom). This was a branch of the Reich MInistry of Science, Education and Culture, it was charged with creating educational films in Nazi Germany. Headed by Kurt Guager, it was founded on June 26th, 1934. Though not a propaganda film per se, it can certainly be argued that the idyllic lifestyle shown in the film has elements of propaganda. Film opens with a rolling shot of the Bavarian landscape, coming to rest in a small town (0:29-0:41). The camera then zooms into the village, and shows the townspeople beginning their day. Shots include a person hanging a pillow from a window, a man attaching a harness to a cow getting it to pull a cart with another cow, a woman feeding chickens, (0:41-3:26). The film then transitions to the man sitting in the cart, riding through town as people are coming out of their houses and getting busy, a person is seen pulling water from a well (3:50-5:06). The farmers are shown shoveling hay into their cart and wrestling a pig into a basket (5:41-6:09). The film shows a man building a cart, and modifying a wheel to fit (7:01-7:18). Village ducks and a village cat are shown, some chickens appear on screen (7:23-7:51). A man is seen possibly sanding down a piece of wood on a horse's shoe (8:17). A long carriage drawn by two horses comes to a stop near a couple of houses, a plethora of bicycles are parked near one house (9:35). There is a poster on the wall of one of the houses of a soldier giving the fascist salute with German text (10:03). The film shows a store selling grain and pans up to a street sign "Avenue of the Burgermeisters" (10:17). The film shows a kindergarten with a NS Schwesternschaft plague (10:20). The film then shows a baker pulling bread out of a stone oven (11:45). The film transitions back to showing daily life in the village (12:37- 13:27). A girl is seen herding ducks down a street (13:40). A man draws water from a well for a cow to drink (14:29). Film ends (16:07). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
