<description>This WWII film from the Army-Navy Screen Magazine series (Issue No. 29; 1944) blends wartime documentary-style news coverage and light-hearted entertainment to show how American soldiers in the South Pacific find moments of relaxation, such as fishing and hunting, while still far from home. It begins with the opening strains of the “Army Air Force” song (today known as “The U.S. Air Force” or commonly, “Wild Blue Yonder”) and “Anchors Away” before opening with “Just Like Home” at mark 00:30, as members of the 13th Air Force stationed in the South Pacific are shown heading out for a day of fishing, and after trolling, head for shore and a picnic as well as some spear fishing and goat hunting. “That’s like Americans, too. Spending the week shooting down Japs and then go goat hunting for a little excitement,” says the narrator at mark 02:00, as we watch the men feast on their roasted prey. By mark 02:30, “East Side West Side” introduces the viewer to Alfred E. Smith, former New York governor, who reads a letter from a former East Side New York resident and takes the viewer on a tour of the area, including stops at the Fulton Fish Market and Seward Park High School, where young men are shown preparing for the day when they will enlist in the service. “Going Home” opens at mark 08:38, and tells the viewer of French pilots training in the United States before heading to the war in Europe, as we then see some of those men in action. Private Snafu (the cartoon character created by director Frank Capra) wraps up the film starting at mark 12:35 with “Gas,” featuring the voice of Mel Blanc. During a gas mask drill, Private Snafu is shown frantically searching for his mask while the rest of his outfit fall in. (Bugs Bunny makes a cameo appearance at mark 13:30). An animated first sergeant then puts Private Snafu through his paces. 0:00 – Soldiers stationed in the South Pacific take a break from combat to enjoy fishing and goat hunting on a remote island, highlighting how even in wartime, Americans find ways to unwind and stay connected to home. 2:39 – A V-mail letter from a soldier prompts a narrated tour of New York’s Lower East Side, showcasing its multicultural makeup and how the community supports the war effort from home. 4:18 – Residents of various backgrounds (Italians, Greeks, Jews, Chinese, etc.) proudly display service flags, reflecting the diverse American spirit and shared sacrifice during the war. 5:20 – Children collect scrap metal, teenagers train in technical skills, and elders sew hospital gowns—all part of the East Side’s civilian war support. 7:13 – People of all faiths pray for their loved ones in uniform, underscoring a united front in preserving American freedoms and values. 8:42 – A segment features French airmen training in the U.S., eager to return to Europe and fight for the liberation of France. 10:00 – French pilots return home to fly Allied bombing missions over occupied France, driven by a deep belief in liberty and national pride. 12:19 – The narrator emphasizes that the spirit of liberty lives in both the skies and the French resistance underground. 13:04 – A brief comic interlude as Private SNAFU is humorously reprimanded for mishandling his gas mask, lightening the mood with a military training satire. 15:00 – A surreal and humorous sketch continues with nonsensical phrases and a spoof on military jargon, ending with a playful exchange.
