The short film discusses the transformation of energy and how work is produced using the various sources and transformations of energy. The film opens with footage of natural landscapes while the narrator discusses how everything is some form of energy. This is the same with cities, cars, bridges and more (film shows corresponding shots of city skylines, trains, streets bustling with cars, bridges, and an ocean liner). The film discusses energy transformations, where potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy, using a mechanical pile driver (01:10), dam (02:17), dynamite (03:10), and radiant energy (03:44) as examples. A train (04:14) shows the both the transformation of mechanical energy and wasted heat energy from friction. This same concept is demonstrated using an apparatus that uses friction to heat water. Two other examples of the transformation of power are the use of a lever and pulley. While machines have replaced traditional sources of work from man and horse, machines must derive their energy from natural resources like oil (08:22) and coal, which derive their energy from solar power. The film concludes that in the future, there will likely be a need to harness the sun’s power from the potential energy of wind and water as current natural resources are depleted.
