(6) An exercise at AIA Airbase tests the mobility and rapid setup of the 659th Tactical Hospital. (7) The 61st Troop Carrier Squadron's efforts to resupply Arctic outposts in Greenland, highlighting the challenges of operating in extreme conditions. (8) The development and testing of the Avrocar, a vertical takeoff and landing research vehicle. 0:43 - 1:01: Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is undergoing runway reconstruction, replacing 27,000 tons of old runway surface with enough concrete to build a 17-mile long two-lane highway. 1:03 - 1:18: The 4th Tactical Fighter Wing has been temporarily relocated to Brookley Air Force Base in Alabama. This deployment is part of their combat readiness training. 1:19 - 1:54: The 4th Tactical Fighter Wing, known for its history in two wars and producing 94 aces, is preparing for a training mission. 2:00 - 2:54: The film highlights the training and readiness of the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing, emphasizing their role in strengthening the United States Air Force's combat capabilities. 3:10 - 4:45: In Orlando, Florida, the 4504th Tactical Missile Training Wing demonstrates the deployment and launch of the TM-76 Mace missile on live TV. 4:48 - 5:43: At the Federal Aviation Agency's experimental center in Atlantic City, a new automatic landing system is being tested, which allows for hands-off landings. 6:07 - 7:12: The film introduces the GAM-77 Hound Dog missile and the GAM-72 Quail decoy missile, both designed to enhance the capabilities of the B-52 bomber. 8:07 - 9:34: An exercise at AIA Airbase tests the mobility of the 659th Tactical Hospital, showcasing their ability to set up a 50-bed hospital quickly. 9:42 - 10:41: The 61st Troop Carrier Squadron resupplies Arctic outposts in Greenland, highlighting the challenges of operating in extreme conditions. 11:02 - 12:43: The film concludes with a look at the Avrocar, a vertical takeoff and landing research vehicle developed by the Avro Aircraft Company. The Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar is a VTOL aircraft developed by Avro Canada as part of a secret U.S. military project carried out in the early years of the Cold War. The Avrocar intended to exploit the Coandă effect to provide lift and thrust from a single "turborotor" blowing exhaust out of the rim of the disk-shaped aircraft. In the air, it would have resembled a flying saucer. Originally designed as a fighter-like aircraft capable of very high speeds and altitudes, the project was repeatedly scaled back over time and the U.S. Air Force eventually abandoned it. Development was then taken up by the U.S. Army for a tactical combat aircraft requirement, a sort of high-performance helicopter. In flight testing, the Avrocar proved to have unresolved thrust and stability problems that limited it to a degraded, low-performance flight envelope; subsequently, the project was cancelled in September 1961. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
