The Ordinance Corp's major initiative is to supply the army with ammunition and weapons. The film was created to promote new weaponry such as the prototype for the M116 cargo carrier; the T 116 amphibious cargo carrier, tested in the Arizona desert. Others include the M520 Go-er, the self-propelled howitzer T36, M60 battle tank, and the M61 Vulcan anti-aircraft weapon. A series of missiles are tested at the Aberdeen proving ground including the Nike Hercules and Corporal missiles. An LVTP-7 drives through the water (:22), a soldier mans the gun sight. The T116 lightweight (:41) drives up; ground support spills out (:53) demonstrating the ease of movement. The M520 'Go-er' pushes through mud. This 8 ton 4 by 4 truck was the US Army’s standard heavy tactical truck prior to the innovations of the HEMTT. The Go-er drops into the water displaying amphibious capabilities (1:38). The eight inch self-propelled howitzer T236 bounces through water and sand (2:03). The M60 main battle tank sinks into water (2:36). The M61 Vulcan (2:54) blows a 20 mm round from the Gatling style rotary cannon. The M61 and it's derivatives have been the principle cannon among the US military fixed wing aircraft for 50 years. The 'Mighty Mouse' missile is tested (3:23). The Davey Crockett missile is fired at the proving grounds (3:50). The warhead receives soft recovery treatment by a team of divers (4:12). The Sergeant; a surface to surface guided missile (4:24) is compared to its predecessor; the Corporal. It shoots off (4:38). The surface to surface missile; the Pershing missile is fired (4:48). The Corporal follows (5:15). This missile was the first guided weapon authorized by the US to carry a nuclear warhead. It operates as a guided tactical ballistic missile with a range of 75 nautical miles. It was initially designed for cold war hostilities in Eastern Europe. The countdown (5:29) leads to the launching (5:36). Radar tracks the missile (5:45). The huge Nike Hercules (6:04) is a solid fuel propelled two stage surface to air missile employed by NATO and US armed forces. It could be fitted with conventional warheads or the W31 nuclear warhead. The Nike Hercules missile intercepts a Corporal missile (6:00).  The explosion is traced in the sky (7:05). The MGR-1 Honest John missile (7:16) shoots off. The film wraps up with images of the Nike Zeus anti-ballistic missile (8:24). This nuclear war head hits supersonic speeds. It was created to withstand the icbm threat. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
