This film served as an introduction / overview to students enrolled in a special adult education civil defense class. The course syllabus provided this overview: A Civil Defense Adult Education Course is presented. It contains 10 lesson plans: Course Introduction, Modern Weapons and Radioactive Fallout (Effects), Modern Weapons and Radioactive Fallout(Protection), National Civil Defense Program, National Shelter Program (Community Shelters), National Shelter Program (Home Shelters), Local Civil Defense and Community Shelter Plans, Survival on the Farm, Individual and Family Preparedness for Shelter Living, and Emergence from Shelters. Note: this course was apparently still being taught into the early 1970s. 0:00 - 0:27: Introduction by Gary Moore, mentioning the importance of the course in civil defense and how it can improve survival odds. It was intended to accompany "Personal and Family Survival", a civil defense manual provided as part of an adult education course by the Office of Civil Defense. 0:28 - 0:47: Emphasis on the knowledge provided by the manual, which can protect against radioactive fallout. 1:12 - 1:24: Discussion of a nuclear explosion -- atomic bomb blast at the Nevada test site is shown -- and the reality of a possible nuclear attack. 1:25 - 2:00: Purpose of the course and manual is to save lives in case of a nuclear attack on America. ICBMs, nuclear ballistic missile submarines, and other weapons are shown. 2:01 - 2:57: Explanation of Civil Defense and the constant threat of conflict worldwide and the importance of military and civil defense. 2:58 - 3:02: Newspaper headline about the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Historical context of the nuclear age beginning with the splitting of the atom and the first nuclear weapon. 3:03 - 4:01: Historical perspective on new weapons causing initial terror but eventually being understood and defended against. B-52 drops the X-15 rocket plane, Pershing tank rumbles past. 4:02 - 5:00: Comparison of nuclear weapons to past weapons, emphasizing the importance of knowledge in overcoming fear. Anti-aircraft missile fires and destroys a jet aircraft target. At 4:40, a man in a hazmat suit studies what might be a nuclear weapon or debris. 5:01 - 6:00: Encouragement to replace fiction with fact and ignorance with knowledge to better understand and defend against radiation. A man walks down the street with a geiger counter checking for nuclear fallout. 5:50 shots of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. and Secretary of State Dulles and President Lyndon Johnson. 6:01 - 7:00: Introduction to the civil defense course and the importance of having a plan and knowledge to act in an emergency. A suburban American home. 6:53: civil defense alert siren sounds and civilians react to it while the narrator mentions a "plan". At 7:20, a mother examines what might contaminated fruit. At 7:40, a victim of radiation sickness. At 7:46, a calendar is checked off -- when is it safe to leave? 7:01 - 8:00: Civil defense quiz to assess current knowledge and preparedness for a nuclear emergency. 8:01 - 8:58: Conclusion emphasizing the importance of the civil defense course and manual in providing necessary knowledge and protection.
