<description>This 1945 U.S. Navy film shows the strength of the U.S. Navy’s Pacific fleet under the command of Vice Admiral Richard L. Conolly during the Second Battle of Guam (21 July-10 August 1944) as well as appeals for financial support via war bonds from Admiral Ernest J. King and Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal. The film opens with a shot of naval guns on a ship deck, planes with folded wings on the deck of a carrier (they appear to be Grumman TBF Avengers), and a Consolidated PBY Catalina flying over the task force, which the narrator dubs the “greatest assembly of sea.” Viewers see carriers, battleships, and destroyers. Admiral Ernest J. King speaks to the camera about the film and the status of the U.S. Navy (01:05). The American flag is raised over the rubble on the island of Guam (01:45). Battleship USS Washington fires its guns (02:08). The film shows the cruiser USS San Francisco (02:40), destroyers, and a submarine being launched at Manitowoc, WI (03:09). Through the perspective from a submarine’s periscope viewers see a Japanese ship destroyed by a torpedo. PT boats (patrol torpedo boats) cruise on the water (03:33). There is an aerial view of the fleet. A DE—destroyer escort—moves along the water and makes a depth charge attack (03:55); aerial footage shows the depth charge detonating behind the ship. Next, the film shows a “Baby Flattop,” a converted merchant ship that carries Grumman TBF Avengers; an Avenger takes off; another fires a forward-firing rocket at a test site (04:50). Footage shows Navy men being cared for in a Navy hospital (05:00). Wounded are evacuated onto a ship. Surgeons work on a wounded soldier in an operating room. Men pray on the deck of a ship during a service led by a Navy chaplain (05:52). There is more footage of the Navy fleet moving in the Pacific. Amphibious craft move from transport ships toward shore. One ship fires a number of rocket batteries (06:25), and viewers see the rockets hitting targets on the shore. Navy Seabees move supplies to shore (06:47). Footage shows Seabees using heavy equipment to take out trees and build an airstrip in the jungle. A plane takes off from the newly-built airstrip. Aerial footage shows the island with the fleet just off its coast (07:36). The film then shows footage of fighting to recapture Guam. Men clean ordnance on the deck of a ship (08:05). A Douglas SBD Dauntless takes off from the deck of a carrier (08:22). The dive bombers attack Japanese targets on Guam. Heavy navy guns on the battleships and cruisers fire on the island. Men stand with artillery shells ready to reload the ships’ guns. Men and tanks are transported to the beach (09:45). Soldiers wade to shore. Men secure the beachhead and then move inland. Viewers see the destruction from the Navy bombardment as Japanese buildings are in rubble and corpses litter the ground. The film then uses illustrations and basic animation to show the total power of the U.S. Navy, counting the total number battleships, carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and other warships, auxiliary vessels, and amphibious craft, as well as Navy planes. The film concludes with Secretary Forrestal addressing the camera about the costs of the building and maintaining the Navy’s strength and promoting war bonds sales.
