This black & white educational film is about Diesel Engine Governors and is presented by the United States Navy, Bureau of Aeronautics. Copyright is 1942. Opening titles: The United States Navy, Bureau of Aeronautics presents Diesel Engine Governors (:06-:38). A large, industrial diesel engine. A governor is a system that is used to maintain the mean speed of an engine, within certain limits, under fluctuating load conditions. It does this by regulating and controlling the amount of fuel supplied to the engine. Animation shows how a governor works. Centrifugal force is an apparent force that acts outward on a body moving around a center, arising from the body's inertia. Centrifugal force is shown in play (:39-2:14). Title: Over-speed governor. An overspeed governor is a safety device which acts as a stopping mechanism in case the engine runs beyond its rated speed. Over-speed trip, is a safety feature provided on the diesel engine of the ship to restrict uncontrolled acceleration of the engine, leading to mechanical failure or untoward accidents. This is shown and explained via animation (2:15-5:32). Title: Regulating Governor. A centrifugal governor is a specific type of governor with a feedback system that controls the speed of an engine by regulating the flow of fuel or working fluid, so as to maintain a near-constant speed. It uses the principle of proportional control. This is shown with animation and explained in great detail (5:33-8:20). Compensating plunger on a piston. Diagram explains further detail of the regulating governor. Needle valve. Power piston (8:21-10:02). Compensating system. Governor maintains engine speed with an increased load. Oil from gear pump forces piston upward. Pieces inside the engine are shown and explained (10:03-11:45). Engine speed returns to normal. Lubricating oil. System is flushed out. Make sure oil is always at the proper level. An experienced operator is the only one who should fix a governor (11:46-13:04). End Credits (13:05-13:11).
