        <description>This silent home movie footage was captured by an unknown Californian and shows the 1951 Rose Parade and portions of the 37th Rose Bowl College football game in Pasadena, California. The Rose Bowl is the oldest and most prestigious post season college football game hosted in the historic Rose Bowl Stadium 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Opened in 1922, it is a National Historic Landmark and California cultural hotspot. The Champions of the Big Ten Conference; the Michigan Wolverines defeated the Pacific Coast Champs; California’s Gold Bears 14-6 on January 1st. Michigan’s fullback Don Dufek scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, awarding him the title ‘Player of the Game.’ It was Michigan’s fifth consecutive win and California 3rd straight loss. Street side shots of the parade open as vibrant floats caked in natural flowers run down Green Street, Orange Grove, Colorado Blvd, Sierra Madre Blvd and Villa Street. The theme was “Joyful Living.” Prominent guests participated including film star Leo Carillo and Korean War Veteran, Marine Corporal Robert S. Gray, (standing in for General Dwight D. Eisenhower). 1951’s Rose Queen was Eleanor Payne. Her coronation was the first to be filmed in color. L. Clifford Kenworthy operated as President. A. Ray Benedict was Pasadena’s mayor. Swaths of Californians and press attended. Local and global businesses sponsored floats showcasing their presence and products including Minute Maid Frozen OJ, Chevrolet and Treasure Tone Paints amid 40-50 other participants. Local marching bands intersperse the flood of floats including Pasadena City College, University of Michigan, Golden Bears of Berkeley and John Muir’s College Marching Band. Film opens with the Marine Corps Reserves Float (:19). Topped with a large golden eagle (:31); “Swords to Plowshares” was meant to be symbolic of a desire for a more peaceful future. Reportedly, Staff Sgt. Irma Price, Tech Sgt. G. T. Edenfels and Master Sgt, J. D. Green participated in it’s construction. Richmond California’s float (:32) featured themes of patriotism and unity. Carol May, Nancy Foster and volunteers helped decorate. A marching band (:41) and motorcade follow (1:11). Footage transitions to a stadium of crammed seats (1:15) and cheerleaders somersaulting through center field. Teams enter the stadium (1:22-1:31). Close shots show the end zone (1:34). Footage follows from the stands between fans as the game begins (1:40). Spectators form an “M” honoring Michigan (1:47). The San Gabriel Mountains rim the background. The University of California Marching Band fills the field (1:56). It returns to the Rose Parade (2:22) with the Fisherman’s Feista float (2:25), waltz dancers atop Santa Monica’s float (2:48), Chevrolet’s entry (3:00), Cal Poly’s Barn Dance float (3:12) and the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West fraternity’s entry follow (3:27). Cal Poly was awarded first prize. Santa Clara’s (3:56) and San Jose’s floats (4:04) precede a section of dark footage (4:55-6:33). Stockton’s “The Port of Joyful Living” (6:46), Shriners Hospital (7:00), mounted paraders (7:49) and the Grand Marshal in the Chrysler Imperial Parade Phaeton; a car that would be used to carry numerous Grand Marshal’s including Richard Nixon in 1953follow. The “Joy of Living in Mexico” (8:20), Alhambra’s speedboat float (8:49), Riverside’s float featuring a buggy (9:01), San Fransico’s Fisherman’s Wharf entry (9:08), Sierra Madre’s “Horn of Plenty” (9:37), Kern City and Bakersfield’s “California Gold Rush” (9:48), Treasure Tones Paints’ sponsored float (9:55), Burbank’s “Cinderella” (10:00) and Barstow’s “Western Living” (10:11) drive by. The National Trophy Winner (10:18) was Hawaii’s (10:26) “Hawaiian Holiday”. North Dakota’s (11:02) and Los Angeles’ entries (11:45) appear prior to Minute Maid’s “Sunday Morning Breakfast” advertising their Fresh-Frozen OJ (12:12). Union Oil Company (Unocal) and their “Frozen Fairyland” won the sweepstakes (13:31). The Rose Queen and her court (14:43-14-50) arrive on a float covered in chrysanthemums designed to look like royal robes. Portland’s entry (15:16) paid homage to local pride and local flowers. “Santa Clara Valley in the Heart of California” (15:33) and San Bernadino’s bobsled themed float (16:00) conclude the film.
