From JFK's declaration to put a man on the moon to the first steps on the lunar surface, this NASA film examines the triumphs of the Apollo space program. President John F. Kennedy stated in 1961 that "this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth." This film presents a tribute to the accomplishment and era of the task. The film includes a segment on Apollo 13 (at about the 15 minute mark) as well as subsequent missions. The Apollo program has been called the greatest technological achievement in human history. Apollo stimulated many areas of technology. The flight computer design used in both the lunar and command modules was, along with the Minuteman Missile System, the driving force behind early research into integrated circuits. Computer-controlled machining was first used in the fabrication of Apollo structural components. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
