        <description>This B&amp;W television episode of YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL features eight segments of historic highlights. The first, U.S. Fleet Dividing (:28) opens with a view of the New York Hudson Bay harbor in June, 1919 as sailors return home from WWI (:37). The flagship USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) leads the way (:45) as other ships follow. Admiral William S. Sims, commander over all U.S. naval forces in Europe, emerges to join his family (1:05-1:17). Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels (1:20) agrees that the Navy be divided into three separate fleets on June 16, 1919. Admiral Albert Gleaves (1:29) commands the Asiatic, Admiral Hugh Rodman (1:34) commands the Pacific, and Admiral Henry Wilson (1:37) commands the Atlantic. Also shown is Commander Henry Mayo (1:45). The Navy sets sail (1:55-2:30) in peace as naval aircraft fill the sky (2:39). The second, Shall We Dance (2:52-3:47) features various dancers doing the very athletic Jitterbug in 1925. The third, Miracle of St. Paul’s (3:49) concerns St. Paul’s Cathedral. It opens with a view of it in London, June 25, 1930 (4:03). King George V and Queen Mary (4:23-4:58) attend its reopening after years of restoration. In 1940, during the London Blitz of WWII, an air raid warden (5:02) stands on its roof looking for flames, as bombed neighborhoods in London are on fire (5:06). But as the smoke clears, St. Paul’s still stands (5:23).  The fourth, Personalities of 1930 (5:37) opens with Cecil B. DeMille (5:44-6:13) getting ready to sail off in his yacht. Next shown is Irene Bordoni, a French actress (6:18) followed by British author W. Somerset Maugham (6:34-6:55), best known for his book Of Human Bondage. The fifth, Government Takes Count (6:57) talks about the 1920 census. Census takers go house to house (7:03-7:51). What will be known as an IBM 100 tabulator punch card machine is shown being used (7:52-8:06). The sixth, Aviation (8:08) shows Amelia Earhart (8:18), also known as Lady Lindy, on December 15, 1930 as she boards, buckles into, (8:23-8:46) and takes off in an autogyro (8:47) with the goal to be the first woman to fly solo in this newly developed plane. The seventh, Fashions of the Day (8:58) features models making a loop outside for the camera before returning into the 1918 fashion show. Shown first are the maid’s outfits, followed by negligees, black dresses, evening gowns, and finally bridal gowns (9:04-9:40). An inside runway view is also shown (9:45).  The eighth and final segment, Sports (10:02) begins with high divers in Manhattan’s AAU women’s swimming meet in July, 1935 (10:10-10:28). In the pool, the 440-yard freestyle is underway (10:33-11:02), followed by the 220-yard backstroke (11:03-11:34). The platform divers dive into the harbor water (11:36-12:07).
