<description>This reel of silent footage was produced by Lockheed aircraft in support of the C-5 Galaxy's on-going flight test and development program. The film begins with images of the prototype C-5A aircraft on its first take-off roll on June 30, 1968. Crew that day included Chief Engineering Test Pilot Leo J. Sullivan and test pilot Walter E. Hensleigh, flight engineer Jerome H. Edwards, and E. Mittendorf, flight test engineer. U.S. Air Force test pilot Lieutenant Colonel Joseph S. Schiele was also on board. The aircraft is shwon landing at 1:50. At 2:30 some of Lockheed's Marietta, Georgia plant is shown where the aircraft was built. At 3;22 a problem with vibration or flutter in the tail is shown. At 3:45 the prototype is shown flying with tattletales on the wings. At 5:00 landing gear is folder and unfolded as part of flight tests. At 5:30 the prototype lands on a runway, and is seen at 5:51 in rainy conditions. At 8:30 some kind of taxi test is undertaken with the plane sidling up to a marker. At 9:00 cargo tests being with the aircraft nose up in the "load" position. At 9:50 cargo doors open in flight for a drop test. At 13:30 smoke is deployed from the aircraft as part of flight tests. At 14:10 what appear to be stall tests are untaken, likely at Edwards Air Force Base. At 16:33, tail 68307 is shown in Military Airlift Command paint. At 18:30 the U.S. Air Force Climactic Laboratory at Eglin Air Force Base is shown with the plane undergoing arctic weather condition testing. At 20:50 the plane lands in snowy conditions. At 22:00 are beauty shots of the aircraft. At 22:59 the first air-to-air refueling test is conducted. Various shots of the aircraft performing take-off and landing cycles are shown, most appear shot at Edwards AFB. The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft originally designed and built by Lockheed, and now maintained and upgraded by its successor, Lockheed Martin. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability, one that can carry outsized and oversized loads, including all air-certifiable cargo. The Galaxy has many similarities to its smaller Lockheed C-141 Starlifter predecessor, and the later Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. The C-5 is among the largest military aircraft in the world. The C-5 Galaxy's development was complicated, including significant cost overruns, and Lockheed suffered significant financial difficulties. Shortly after entering service, cracks in the wings of many aircraft were discovered and the C-5 fleet was restricted in capability until corrective work was completed. The C-5M Super Galaxy is an upgraded version with new engines and modernized avionics designed to extend its service life beyond 2040. The USAF has operated the C-5 since 1969. In that time, the airlifter supported US military operations in all major conflicts including Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan, as well as allied support, such as Israel during the Yom Kippur War and operations in the Gulf War. The Galaxy has also been used to distribute humanitarian aid and disaster relief, and supported the US Space Shuttle program.
