The film starts with images shot out of a train car window before showing crowds of vendors trying to sell wares to tourists (:44) aboard the train. The train cars appear to be part of the Southern Pacific Railroad of Mexico. At (1:11), mules are shown with packages that are loaded on the train. At (1:24) mariachis pose for the camera. At (1:55) street scenes in what is probably Mexico City, with large crows visible at a market (2:00). At (2:03) pottery is sold on the street. At (2:13) an Indian woman walks towards camera with a child wrapped around her chest. At (2:20) what appears to be the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. At (2:31) images of the pyramids, Ciudad Prehispánica de Teotihuacán. At (4:29) views of urban Mexico City as seen from the outskirts. At (4:53) images of a parade and celebration complete with fireworks and people wearing elaborate masks. They are dressed as soldiers and have a mock battle. It's possible this is the Carnival of Huejotzingo, which takes place in the Huejotzingo municipality in the state of Puebla. It is noted for its unique traditions which center on the reenactment of stories related to the municipality's history as well as the use of tons of gunpowder used in handcarved muskets in mock battles and other events. The carnival involves the participation of 12,000 residents in costume, most of which are dressed in outfits related to elements of the armies that fought in the Battle of Puebla. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
