The film also shows Operation Sky Shield aka Exercise Sky Shield, which was a series of three large-scale military exercises conducted in the United States and The United Kingdom in 1960, 1961, and 1962 by NORAD (North American Air Defense) Command and CONAD (Continental Air Defense) Command to test defenses against an air attack from the Soviet Union. The tests were intended to ensure that any attacks over the American–Canadian border or coastlines would be detected and then stopped. The film also shows the "Minuteman Train" or Minuteman Mobility Test Train aka Operation Big Star. The Minuteman train was a mobile launch pad on a railway train. Big Star tested Strategic Air Command's deployment of planned trains for launching the ICBMs. Moving the ICBMs by rail might reduce their vulnerability to Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces attack. • 0:40-0:53: Hurricane warnings in Florida; preparations at McCoy Air Force Base to evacuate aircraft. • 1:04-1:12: Missiles at Cape Canaveral are secured as the storm intensifies. • 1:14-1:26: Homestead Air Force Base experiences high winds and heavy rain. • 1:29-1:50: Patrick Air Force Base is affected; Air Force helicopters survey damage in the Florida Keys. • 2:02-2:24: Relief efforts in the Philippines for flood victims, with supplies delivered by Air Force helicopters. • 2:27-2:40: The Air Force's role in disaster relief and humanitarian missions. • 2:55-3:18: Air Force Academy cadets undergo airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia. • 3:21-3:30: Cadets practice parachute recovery techniques. • 3:32-4:09: Cadets complete their final jump to qualify for jump wings. • 4:28-4:46: Air show at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, with 100,000 attendees. • 4:50-5:22: Air show in Anderson, South Carolina, featuring aerobatic performances with F-86 Sabrejets. • 5:35-6:11: Education and extension learning training at correspondence school at Gunner Air Force Base, Alabama, with a surge in student applications. • 6:18-6:42: British policemen train Air Force personnel on driving in challenging conditions. • 7:05-7:16: Testing of the Minuteman ICBM based on railroad train at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. • 7:20-8:16: Minuteman train tests communication systems and personnel adaptation. • 8:27-9:22: Bright Star Pine Cone 3 exercise tests Air Force combat effectiveness with a perfect safety record. • 10:08-10:52: Survival training at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, in extreme cold conditions. • 11:01-11:48: Testing survival gear in cold Atlantic waters. • 12:17-13:06: Operation Sky Shield tests North American air defense systems by grounding civil aviation. • 13:15-13:43: Sky Shield covers 22 million square miles, providing a realistic rehearsal for air defense. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
