The film documents coffee production in southern Brazil, and details how Brazilian coffee is planted, tended, harvested, processed, tasted, packaged, shipped, and then sold in the United States. 0:36 - 0:52: Introduction to coffee production in Latin America, focusing on Brazilian coffee from the southern section of Brazil. 1:05 - 1:19: The process starts with selecting and planting seeds in shaded nurseries. 1:24 - 1:46: Seedlings are transplanted multiple times until they are placed in the field at 18 months. 1:55 - 2:05: A ditch is dug around the new coffee tree to retain water. 2:08 - 2:24: The coffee tree becomes strong in several months, with full production achieved in 5-6 years. 2:27 - 2:43: Description of the coffee tree's leaves and the need for careful cultivation and fertilization. 2:50 - 3:00: Coffee trees in bloom turn the plantation white, and berries appear, changing colors from green to red. 3:02 - 3:19: Harvesting involves placing canvas on the ground to catch berries, with each tree producing about 2 pounds of coffee annually. 3:21 - 3:48: Workers strip the trees, and leaves are removed by hand and by tossing the canvas. 3:55 - 4:10: Hundreds of bags of coffee berries are filled daily and transported to storage tanks. 4:18 - 4:39: Berries are dumped into concrete tanks filled with water for washing. 4:41 - 5:04: Berries are washed to remove grit and other substances. 5:06 - 5:40: Washed berries are transported to drying platforms. 5:43 - 6:08: Drying takes about 3 weeks, with coffee turned regularly and protected from rain. 6:35 - 6:53: After drying, the beans are hulled to remove the outer covering. 6:57 - 7:11: Beans are graded by size in automatic machines. 7:29 - 7:44: Graded coffee is bagged and stored until shipment. 7:49 - 8:03: Coffee is transported by truck to the railroad and then to Santos. 8:05 - 8:18: Santos is a major coffee shipping port, exporting over 1.5 billion pounds of coffee annually. 8:22 - 8:30: Coffee brokers in Santos sell coffee on the streets and in offices. 8:33 - 8:44: Samples of coffee are graded by experts based on fragrance and appearance. 8:58 - 9:03: Rigid tests guarantee the quality of the coffee beans. 9:08 - 9:27: Beans are sized by pouring them into a sieve. 9:36 - 9:42: Final test involves roasting a sample and tasting it to determine flavor. 9:48 - 10:02: After passing tests, coffee is ready for export, especially to the United States. 10:06 - 10:31: Coffee is loaded into trucks, moved through Santos, and shipped to the United States, where it will be consumed in American homes. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
