<description>The ancient kingdom of Nepal is the focus of the short black-and-white film, “Gateway to the Himalayas.” This short documentary explores the ancient kingdom of Nepal, a land of striking contrasts where Buddhism and Hinduism coexist, and temples outnumber homes. Isolated for centuries by mountains and jungle, Nepal has preserved a way of life largely unchanged by modern civilization. The Newar people, known for their exquisite craftsmanship, have shaped much of Nepal’s unique architecture, including the iconic Boudhanath Temple. Life in Nepal is deeply spiritual, with frequent religious festivals and rituals, from joyous celebrations to blood sacrifices. Women display their husbands' wealth through ornate jewelry, while farming remains primitive and challenging. The Gorkhas, Nepal’s ruling tribe and legendary warriors, have played key roles in the British Army, yet their homeland remains steeped in tradition. Nepal emerges as a place of simplicity, beauty, and enduring mystery, only recently opening its doors to the outside world. 0:00 – Nepal is introduced as a remote and mystical kingdom, rich in temples and religious history, blending Buddhism and Hinduism. 1:04 – The intricate architecture and art of Nepal, particularly by the Newar people, astound rare Western visitors. 1:41 – Boudhanath Temple stands as a central pilgrimage site, with prayer flags and watchful Buddha eyes symbolizing devotion. 2:12 – Nepal's population lives a largely unchanged, primitive lifestyle, isolated by mountains and jungles. 2:45 – Despite its isolation, Nepal is a cultural bridge between India and Tibet, reflected in its diverse customs and appearances. 3:10 – Unique cultural expressions are shown, including a yogi with a hair turban and colorful traditional adornments. 4:01 – Women's jewelry is a sign of wealth; husbands invest their savings in their wives’ ornaments. 4:19 – Religious festivals are frequent, some joyous and others gruesome, such as the buffalo sacrifices during Dasain. 4:46 – Weddings are extravagant, with the groom covering all costs, including the bride’s ornaments and ceremonies. 5:11 – Daily life is tough due to poor soil, primitive tools, and animals like sacred monkeys damaging crops. 5:36 – Pashupati, near Kathmandu, is a sacred site where Hindus hope to be cremated and their ashes placed in the Bagmati River. 6:03 – The Bagmati River serves both spiritual and practical purposes, including laundry. 6:19 – The Gorkhas, Nepal’s ruling tribe, took control 200 years ago and now dominate both the military and government. 6:47 – Despite cultural quirks, Gorkhas are known as fierce warriors, serving with distinction in the British Army. 7:28 – Though Gurkhas have traveled, Nepal itself remains largely untouched by modern civilization, preserving its raw beauty and ancient traditions.
