The Mayflower II was built in Devon, England in 1955 in a collaboration between Englishman Warwick Charlton and the Plimoth Patuxet living history museum. It is currently housed at the Pilmouth Patuxet in Plymouth Harbor, Massachusetts. The film begins with a view of the Mayflower II sitting in the harbor, then zooms in on the prow and tiller (0:44). Men are shown raising the sails, and the camera then pans to spectators watching from shore (0:50). Plymouth’s Lord Mayor bids the Mayflower II crew godspeed as it sets sail from the port 337 years after its namesake. Crew wearing Pilgrim-style belt buckle hats board a rowboat and sail to the ship (1:23). The Mayflower II first set sail in 1957, and recreated the original voyage from England across the Atlantic Ocean, taking 54 days. Crewmen handle the rigging, made of more than 50 ropes, to raise and lower the sails (1:54). The Mayflower II was 90 feet long and 25 feet at the widest point. Captain Alan Villiers, who commanded the ship, peers through a sextant at the horizon (2:28). Captain Villiers and another crewmember kneel to look at a map on the ship’s deck (2:47). Crewmen swab the deck (2:51). A man pulls chunks of salted beef out of storage (3:00). The ship’s doctor harvests watercress from the watercress garden, which was grown in a box onboard (3:11). Men are shown eating dinner (salt beef and watercress), sleeping in the rigging, and getting haircuts. A crewmember mans the tiller in a raincoat as the Mayflower II navigates through rough seas in a storm (4:09). Captain Villiers presents the 17-year-old cabin boy, one of the few Americans onboard, with a certificate marking his participation (4:36). Men gather on the quarter deck to participate in Sunday religious services (5:07). Ship officers give short talks on Pilgrim history and early exploration (5:20). The ship is shown fairly stagnant in the water as it travels through the horse latitudes, where it only traveled 11 miles in one day (5:35). Men talk, read and play cards on deck (5:45). A black cat named Felix, who traveled on the ship, is shown curled up in the top of a sail (5:48). Men dive into the water off the ship (5:57). The Mayflower II heads north and re-enters the trade lanes, encountering other ships (6:14). Men wave and look through binoculars at the shore as the ship nears Nantucket Lightship (6:44). A blimp is shown tracking the Mayflower II in the air (6:49). The ship completes its voyage and pulls into Provincetown Harbor (7:24). Crowds gather on shore to greet the Mayflower II as it pulls into port (7:49). Crewmembers disembark and are greeted by the crowd. A closeup of Plymouth Rock with the date 1620 carved into it is shown (8:14). The film ends with a view of the Mayflower II sitting in the harbor.
