They flew aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy 747SP July 14, 2011. The teachers observed as scientists collected data using the German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz Frequencies (GREAT) instrument installed on the 2.5-meter infrared telescope. The SOFIA aircraft is operated by NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center and based at Hangar 703 in Palmdale, CA.
