The film shows a widely celebrated era at Indianapolis, when driver skill was even more critical to success. It was also a time when safety equipment and car design lagged behind the performance envelope of the vehicles, causing a series of deadly incidents, and precipitating many significant changes and improvements in the years that followed. 00:00 The 1955 crash involving Vukovich after another car spins and blocks the track. 1:11 - Sam Hanks’ roadster loses its transmission while fighting for the lead. 1:43 - Eddie Sachs slides through turn one, narrowly missing Tony Bettenhausen. 2:11 - Len Sutton hits the wall in turn one but escapes injury. 2:31 - A lead battle is interrupted by a crash involving Chuck Weyant, Mike Magill, Jud Larson, and Red Amick. 3:05 - All four drivers survive, but their cars are out of the race. 3:16 - 1959. Ray Crawford hits the wall and splits his fuel tank. 3:28 - Rookie Don Davis spins on the main straightaway and stops in front of fast-moving traffic. 3:45 1961. A. J. Shepherd loses control while trying to avoid Davis, triggering a five-car pileup. 4:07 - Slow-motion footage shows Davis’ spin was caused by oil spraying onto his wheels. 4:40 - 1961. Shepherd hits the wall, crashes into Bill Cheesbourg, and the pileup spreads. 4:54 - Jack Turner flips while avoiding the wreck but lands upright. 5:09 - All five drivers safely reach the pits, with only Turner suffering a minor knee cut. 5:26 - Helmets, seat belts, shoulder harnesses, and roll bars for preventing worse injuries. 5:45 - The track is cleared and racing resumes. 5:50 - The film shifts to car design, repairs, and whether wrecked cars can be ready for Memorial Day. 6:15 - A damaged Lotus is shown after a mishap involving Dan Gurney. 6:41 -1963. Jack Turner announces his retirement after another airborne crash. He made the announcement from his hospital bed following the frightening, high-speed qualifying crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where his car barrel-rolled down the main straightaway and caught fire 7:02 - Len Sutton’s badly damaged car is shown over several days. 7:40 - 1963. Dempsey Wilson crashes in turn one during practice. 7:46 - Rookie Ronnie Duman hits the wall again during Friday practice. 8:43 -1955, Jim Hurtubise crashes but is not injured. 8:55 - Chuck Rodee’s tire explodes after striking metal debris. 9:13 - 1964 A major fiery crash unfolds as drivers try to pass through spreading flames. 9:38 - Ronnie Duman climbs over the wall and escapes. 9:54 - The race is stopped for the first time in Speedway history because of an accident. 10:07 - The deaths of Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald are announced to a silent crowd. 10:18 - 1964 Parnelli Jones enters the pits for a fast service stop. 10:40 - Jones’ car catches fire as he is pushed away. 10:51 - Jones steers into the pit wall, jumps out, and rolls to extinguish the flames. 11:19 - Old 98 burns fiercely and is out of the race. 11:38 - Branson survives a crash, but his car is badly damaged. 11:59 - 1965 Bobby Unser crashes in a supercharged Novi after another car spins in front of him. 12:20 - Both drivers safe, but their cars likely out of contention. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
