The Greater New York Fund is a pension program; a multi-layer employer benefit program whose pension provides retirement and personal benefits for eligible New Yorkers established in 1963. This film relays the various benefits the Greater New York Fund provides for its members through a series of cases including a deaf child receiving education with the help of the Greater New York Fund and the New York School for the Deaf as well as a disgruntled unguided youth receiving aide and direction through trade schooling. It is a Transfilm Production (:16). Aerial shots show the city of Manhattan (:35). Ground views watch New York pedestrians buzz for street shops (:44). The view runs down office buildings (:49). Kitty Kelly Shoes sell footwear off Park Avenue South (:54).  A 1941 De Soto taxi cab sits against the curb (:56). Corporate employees push in and out of corporate buildings (1:01). The first case features a father whose son lost his hearing. Patrick Kelly; a 35 year old building mason is introduced (1:13). He looks over photographs of his wife and five year old kid (1:24). He recalls a phone call from the past (1:43) during which he discovers his son is deaf.  Patrick and his neighbors meet through a counseling service (2:29). Their son learns (3:00) to read with a teacher at the New York School for the Deaf founded in 1817.  Mother and father watch over (3:51). He reminisces over aspects of the program made readily available to their family (4:06). Another case features a 25 year old salon employee, popular and engaged to be married (4:21). She unexpectedly falls ill from infantile Paralysis (polio). Cost of physical therapy is touched upon (5:21). She is able to return to work with ease and continue marriage plans (6:05). A photography apprentice; Joey works with blueprints (6:21) and a photo copier (6:41). Joey's dubious past is looked to; uncombed hair and dirty face sneer as his mother pesters him over calls from the truancy officer (7:07). A few weeks later; Joey's performance begins to improve following admission into a trade school (8:00). His coach notes an improvement in his basketball performance (8:09). It is noted the vocational agency effectively connected Joey to schooling and family counseling (8:20). Another case shows an employee’s recovery after a traffic related accident. Middle aged Benjamin Good (8:47); takes a call on a rotary phone. The film falls six years into Good's past (9:11). A cop bends over to identify Joey's injured and unconscious body following the accident. Surgeons (9:43) stand over Good's body. The IV drip bag hangs (9:51). The film begins to conclude as each case (10:17) is looked to again including support provided by the agencies. Pamphlets note over 423 agencies were spread over five boroughs (11:15). New Yorker's in winter jackets buzz on the street (11:23). This was a Transfilm production (11:39).  Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
