This ship was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers of the United States Navy, launched on 5 September 1945. The film likely dates to the early era of the Korean War -- probably 1950 -- when the ship supported United Nations ground troops in coordination with USS Valley Forge. Its first engagement was during the Battle of Pusan Perimeter and then during the Inchon Landings and the Second Battle of Seoul and the Chosin Reservoir Campaign. Philippine Sea saw three tours to Korea during the war, receiving nine battle stars for her service. After several deployments to the Far East, the vessel became an anti-submarine warfare platform, before being decommissioned in 1958. Some of the highlights shown in the film include: (:37) replenishment at sea from supply vessel, at (1:27) the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge (CV-45) is visible in the background. At (1:34) a firing exercise is undertaken with anti-aircraft guns; at (3:07) tracer ammunition is seen in use. At (5:37) a Grumman F9F Panther, one of the United States Navy's first successful carrier-based jet fighters, lands on the deck. At (5:42) another Panther engages the barrier in an emergency landing maneuver. The crew then resets the barrier. At (6:23) an F4U-4 Corsair moves across the flight deck. At (7:00) Panthers are launched from the forward catapults. At (7:42) an AD-6 Skyraider maneuvers into position. Good shot of the wooden flight deck. At (8:05) a Corsair is launched. At (9:30) a Corsair comes in for a landing. At (9:55) a Skyraider goes around. Silhouette shots of the air operations control area, with planes tracked by grease pencil (10:05). A rescue helicopter stands ready (10:53). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
