It shows glimpses of the sailors eating and relaxing, and how air quality is analyzed and maintained even though many of the crew are apparently chain smokers. HMS Conqueror was a British Churchill-class nuclear-powered fleet submarine that served in the Royal Navy from 1971 to 1990. She was the third submarine of her class, following the earlier Churchill and Courageous, which were all designed to face the Soviet threat at sea. She was built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead. Conqueror is the only nuclear-powered submarine to have engaged an enemy ship with torpedoes, sinking the cruiser General Belgrano during the 1982 Falklands War. Mountains and water (00:08). Sailors of the Royal Navy (00:17). Views of the sailors manning the HMS Conqueror fleet submarine (00:19). Views of the submarine driving through water (00:35). Sailors stand on top of the driving submarine (00:42). Bird’s-eye-views of the submarine at sea (00:49). A sailor smokes a cigarette while lying in bed in the submarine (00:59). A chef is cutting meat (01:11). Sailors serve themselves in a cafeteria (01:27). Boxes are being stacked (01:25). One sailor attends to the atmosphere purifiers on board the submarine (01:38). A chef retrieves food from a freezer (01:54). An analyzer checking levels of toxic gasses (02:21). A crew member announces his intention to start the electrolyzer on radio (02:29). He then starts the electrolyzer (02:40). Bird’s-eye-views of the submarine at sea (02:50). One crew member is looking through the submarine’s periscope (02:54). Other crew members also work in the control room (03:00). Views of the crew member is looking through the submarine’s periscope (03:05). The crew in the control room receives orders and prepares for diving (03:11) and the submarine dives below the water’s surface (03:38). The submarine is fully submerged (04:11). One crew member on the submarine is checking the atmosphere measures (04:16). A sailor lies in bed and smokes (04:36). Views of the atmosphere polluter analyser (04:43). The crew member writes down the analyzer’s readings of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and oxygen (04:50). The readings are transferred to the chart in the control room (05:20). The periscope is lowered (05:30). The readings are reported to the captain (05:36). The captain makes an announcement on the submarine, asking his crew to minimize smoking due to high levels of carbon monoxide (06:04). A sailor lies in bed and smokes (06.10). A no smoking lamp turns on (06:16). The smoking crew member turns off his cigarette (06:19). A crew member enters the ‘Torpedo room’ and turns on an air purifier (06:24). Mountains and water (06:39). The submarine emerges from below water (06:47). Bird’s-eye-views of the submarine at sea (06:59). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
